OK. We LOVE tunics, but first we need to clear up some misconceptions about what a tunic exactly is.
At its most basic, a tunic is a top (duh), but that’s where much of the agreement ends. After that it becomes sorta like porn: you know it when you see it. Let’s skip the whole ancient Roman Empire origins and fast-forward to now, when we shall attempt an amalgam of a description:
A tunic is basically a loose-fitting top that usually extends to the knees or at least the hips. The essence of the tunic is often interchangeable with the mini-dress, and it can (and usually should!) be worn over something, like leggings, tights, jeans or shorts.
That’s it. We’re not going to get into the difference between tunics and smocks, tunics and frocks, tunics and jumpers or tunics and everything else. Instead, let’s just take what the awesome Anna Sui said about tunic’s cousin, the mini-dress, and appropriate it into a simple working definition of the tunic: “It’s really a giant T-shirt that’s dressier, prettier and a little more feminine.” Word.
So, that, and the fact that they’re really cute and look great on all body types and they’re really in style and perfect for looking adorbs in warm weather is just about all you need to know.
Now that we’ve gotten to know the tunic inside and out, here are 10 top tunic picks to fit all budgets and bodies.
