We got to sit down and chat with Jordin Sparks before she headed into the TRL studio today, and, for the record, the season six American Idol winner is a total glamazon -- ie: she's way taller and cuter than she looks on TV. Here's what she had to say about her self-titled debut album, her plans for the holidays and how she sometimes wishes she could let her anger out.
Buzzworthy: What's been the biggest change in your life since you won American Idol?
Jordin Sparks: There have been a ton of changes. I open up magazines and I'm in them, which has been very crazy. Last year I was watching awards shows and now I get to be there. I guess the biggest change, though, has been that I haven't been at home very much. I have been home about a week and a half since I first appeared on Idol, so I'm definitely looking forward to being home for Christmas.
BW: What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
JS: I'm doing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and then I'm going home for the night, so hopefully I'll get to watch a football game and eat some turkey with my family.
BW: What can fans expect from your debut album?
JS: The album is a mixture of different things representing who I am. I love all different types of music, so I kind of ended up with a big mixture of different sounds. But they all fit together, so it was really weird how it turned out. There's stuff that's more rhythmic, there's stuff that's more guitar driven and there's definitely ballads … because everyone knows I love to do ballads. [Laughs.] There are songs that make you think and songs that make you want to roll down your window. There's a little bit of everything.
BW: Do you get to rock out at all?
JS: I really wish I could have, but that wouldn't have fit at all. Sometimes I wish I could be angry in my music, but I can't scream like that. But what's cool about my album is it kind of gives me room to grow, so maybe on my next album I'll do more rock.
BW: What's your advice to other singers who strive to become the next American Idol?
JS: Definitely keep trying. There are always going to be people who are going to tell you no, but you can't give up. Giving up is way harder than actually trying. I'd just say go for it and keep persevering and be yourself, 'cause people will love you for you. As cliché as that sounds, it's true.
BW: You didn't give up when you were turned down for Idol the first time around. Could you imagine if you hadn't gone back and auditioned again?
JS: I don't know what I'd be doing right now. I definitely wouldn't have an album coming out right now and wouldn't be doing all this. I'm definitely very, very happy that I tried out again.
