We’ve met a lot of celebs in our day, but we’ve pretty much accepted the fact that we may never meet Madonna. Especially not cone-bra-era Madonna. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have our own little pocket Madge to take with us on the train and tell our dirty little secrets and bedtime stories to. And how? Through the crafty powers of Carol Meldrum, author of the cheeky new book Knitted Icons: 25 Celebrity Doll Patterns, (Quirk Books) which provides step-by-step instructions on how to knit your favorite rocker, plus a parade of pop culture figures (Jackie O.), Marxists (Che Guevara), spiritual leaders (an especially hilarious Gandhi, complete with tiny glasses) and early action heroes (Godzilla, King Kong).
Classic rock fans can make a wee Bob Marley, Ziggy Stardust, or all of the Beatles (St. Pepper era), if you’re feeling super ambitious. And Will and Grace fans can turn back time and make a butt-exposing Cher.
You could even whip up a mini Warhol as a stocking stuffer for, say, Ashlee Simpson. And if you’re feeling super crafty, you could go off the reservation and stitch up a mini Amy Winehouse like the appropriately drunken-looking one featured here, complete with a matching Blake in prison-issued jumpsuit.
Anyway, we love this book (though probably not enough to learn to knit, but more ambitious readers can employ the knitting lessons Meldrum provides in the beginning of the book), but we must note a few conspicuous absentees we’d like to see included in the next edition: Paris Hilton, former *NSYNC manager Lou Pearlman, Lil’ Kim, pregnant Jamie Lynn Spears, Chris Crocker, pregnant Lily Allen, Montell Jordan.
Knitted Icons retails for $15.95 and is available on Amazon.com.
