The perfect storm of game-changing creativity and undeniable style that is Erykah Badu landed at the MTV mothership here at 1515 Broadway yesterday. But she didn’t just come to show off her mushroom cloud afro, lens-less glasses and Mars Volta-meets-Greased Lightening get-up; she also gave us an advance listen to her new album, New Amerykah, which took, oh, only five years to make.
And ho.ly. hell, was the wait ever worth it. Cueing up tracks off her laptop, the Soulquarian (it's a real word. Google it.) dropped snippets of a handful of tracks that ranged from bell-bottomed Curtis Mayfield Superfly outtakes to futuristic space-soul bangers of the late, great J Dilla variety. Good thing this won't be out for a few weeks because seriously, you're not ready for this.
The record's set to drop February 26.
