Artist Of The Week: Atmosphere

atmosphere_lemonade_stand.jpg

Not since that paisley purple funk-filled egg cracked open to reveal Prince has Minneapolis produced such crucial musicians. Indie hip-hop duo Atmosphere — made up of MC Slug and producer Ant, primarily — has been cranking out conscious-raising, metaphor-laced sagas in album form for close to 15 years. Overcast!, their first official album as Atmosphere, debuted in 1997. On fan favorite Lucy Ford, Slug introduced ongoing recurring character “Lucy,” a lyrical metaphor for wack chicks and relationship woes. The complex, introspective God Loves Ugly reinforced the duo’s willingness to both spit some tough game and walk home with their proverbial tale between their legs, two themes explored further on the female-trouble-oriented Seven’s Travels. After 2005’s You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having was met with mixed reviews, Atmosphere returned last month to drop the brilliantly named When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That S*** Gold, which entered The Billboard 200 at #5 — a career-high for the duo and their Rhymesayers label.

The album is as complex as anything Slug and Ant have dreamed up in the past. The mix is lush, the guests include a beatboxing Tom Waits and TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, and (our favorite part) the deluxe edition boasts a hardcover, a bonus DVD (Sad Clown Bad Dub 13) and a Slug-penned children’s story across it’s 36 pages. Awesome!

Let’s just say we love it, which is why we tapped Slug and Ant to set up shop — in this case, a hip-hop lemonade stand — all this week on MTV.

Moreover, you can dig into plenty of Atmosphere on MTV.com. Like the music videos for Lemons‘ “Guarantees” and “Shoulda Known,” among others, photos from the MTV shoot, and clips from MTV2’s Subterranean. And don’t miss the interview Slug gave MTV’s Sucker Free blog.

It gets even better. Take your adoration for Atmosphere worldwide web-style with Tag It on the duo’s Paint That S*** Gold web site. Use the virtual spraypaint to make your mark anywhere and submit it to the gallery. Just don’t deface Buzzworthy, k? Thanks.

  1. What's good? Hearing your song, "Guarantees" hits close to home. I feel your lyrics, I am a single mom, with more then one reason to give up, the point is not to. You never know when your number is up, so make the most of it.

Keep your head Up, and thanks for the great music.

    Sincerely,
    Melissa
  2. one of the best lyricists of all time, and most people dont even know about them. congrats on getting this far slug and ant
  3. Nice to see a local artist getting reconized especailly atmosphere they definatly deserve it. Cant wait to see them play on may 25th.
  4. It's been a while since I heard a rap song that actually spoke to me. Great choice. Excellent lyricist!
  5. It's about time Slug and Ant get the recognition they deserve. BY FAR the best lyricists around. Proud of you men =)
  6. Its about time people recognize Atmosphere's brillance!
  7. atmosphere is way to sick to be on mtv anyone who starts listening to them now is just jumping on the band wagon and thats retarded thats something u do for some one shitty like lil wayne who sucks,
rhyme sayers and MidWest for life!
  8. It sucks that all you MTV saps will now think they know about Atmosphere.

    Mainstreamness sucks big time.
    >:(
  9. so I just heard about these guys I like them a lot and I wish I could sing like that it's amazing you know but I sing like sh** so that won't be happenin ha!I'm thinkin i better go get the cd lol I dig it they are pretty tight so yeah.....
  10. The best part about atmopshere is they can make a new cd and your not like uhh i like the old @*#$ better cause everything these guys make is brilliant as condoms and fresh like a virgin in a refridgerator. Big ups sluggo and anthony.
  11. Atmosphere keeps it true no matter if he breaks into mainstream or not. I've been a fan since the Overcast days and still am a fan post You Cant Imagine. At least now his words can reach more people then just us rhymesayer heads.
  12. sounds & looks like the dude from the free credit report.com commercials, only i like the other dude better. i dont see what is so profound about this. now its white people singing about how life is hard instead of brown people. not a big deal.
  13. Much respect to ATMOSPHERE! "And if I ever go gold, I must've wrote that #?#? in blood!"

15 years! it's about damn time.

and forget all that "jumping on the bandwagon" BS... these guys deserve every new fan they get. people been on the bandwagon.
  14. i must admit, at first i did think that slug and ant were selling out to MTV... but f**k all that BS, you guys freakin' deserve it! much love.
  15. slug and ant deserve to b artist of the year! "people" who r starting to listen to atmoshere need to stop jumping on da band-wagon! people open up your ears n listen to underground hip hop, not da same @~@@###$ on mainstream, bling bling n cars! been a fan since they called it urban atmophere, headshots, overcast sik album, sadclownbaddub series!! keep representing sluggo!!
  16. Atmosphere has stayed true and will stay true by sticking with rhymesayers. he'll never sign to a major label, shows he does it for the music and fans unlike some "artists" these days
  17. slug n ant should b artis of da year been a fan since they called it urban atmosphere, headshots, overcast one of da sickest albums! people need to open up their ears to underground hip hop, all dat mainstream sucks its all da same bull**** ! bling bling, money, cars! !!rhymesayers for life!! kids stop jumping on da band-wagon n pretend you guys like slug just cuz he is tight- half of you guys dont even catch da rhymes or even heard of him!! keep representing sluggo!!
  18. These guys have been everyone's best kept secret for years now. They deserve every bit of credit they get (they have an amazing work ethic). Even so, this still bums me out to see them on here....hopefully, this will at least give underground hip hop some good exposure.
  19. i just wanna say that this is my uncle.. and yea he's pretty tight.
  20. As a longtime fan, I say these guys deserve every bit of recognition they get. I don't feel they've compromised their musical passions in any way, and I'm not so elitist to imply that others shouldn't be able to experience this great music as well. In my opinion, the people who actually concern themselves with whether something is "mainstream" or underground should get over themselves. This is quality music no matter how many people are listening.
  21. really been a fan of these guys for a while. first cd that got me on was seven's travels. good that their getting more publicity. and hey im a big fan every body and know there is some people that are fans too (before they got this artist of the week shit) but lets not dog the people are just discovering slug and ant through this. lets embrace it. and by the way mtv. Get some other rhymesayers artist on artist of the week like Brother Ali.

    well anyways
    Peace.
  22. GOD Loves Ugly!

Atmosphere deserves all the credit. 10 years unnoticed! They are definitely the unsigned hype!

I hope you guys get big... well kinda. I'm just worried that it will be harder to get tickets to your shows. lol!
  23. Bout damn time real hip hop gets played!!
  24. man its cool for sean and anthony to get out there but at the same time i dont want to see new kids out there pressing how big of fans they are. especially if they can only name full releases like overcast and lucy. if someone is going to impress me they will need some sad clown and early mixtape stuff that only came out in vinyl. growing up midwest first ave when they werent even headlining drinking busch lights in the parking lot in fargo after the show, those days are gone for them . which is good and bad all at the same time. as long as they stay true to the music they will always be my favorite group.
  25. Yeah, Slug and Ant are tight man. "Minnesota land of the cold air..."
  26. Real hip hop needs to reach the masses......it's real easy for somebody not in there shoe's to be like..."your a sellout"...some people got bills and need to support there families....the more heads that hear this @@~$ the better......same as when Aesop Rock was the Artist of the Week.....this is a small sign that things are changing.....like they need to.......this week will be over and a lot of people will forget who Atmosphere even is,but...if a handful of so called "bandwagon jumpers" hop on.......I see that as good........the more "real hip hop heads" the better!!! Thank You!

    Peace

  29. FINALLY!!!! atmosphere makes it onto MTV hellll yes....i love sean daley
  30. atmosphere is the $%#%. Much love from the start. Always a big fan from when they first started out. They never sold out and got here the right way. Always Rhymesayers, turned down the pigs from major labels. Atmosphere are dope and yinz are lucky to have heard them, That's Real talent guys. None of that B.S. mainstream, Crunk-Rap, sell out, all hooks playing money making of real hip-hop.
    Peace much love for atmosphere

    Sameone
  31. I have been listening to slug since before "godlovesugly" and "overcast". I love to see slug on top puttin rhymesayers ent on the map. I hope those that are just picking up on his music, listening , understand and truely respect his music, and dont just listen because they like his new "rap song". slug is one of the most real artists of all time
  32. word up!!! been with you guys since deep puddle dynamics and the beginning of rhymesayers entertainment.. it took long enough for america to finally see what good true hip hop music is. shout out to the rhymesayers, def jux, strange famous records and the fifth element!! peace!!!

    "GOD LOVES UGLY"
  33. Bigger than Jesus,
    Bigger than wrestling
    Bigger than the Beatles
    Bigger than breast implants
Bigger than guns, bigger than cigarettes

    peace
  36. I been listenin to atmos since it was urban atmosphere and no matter what anybody says man slugs the *~#*! and Ants got the beats. ~$?? everyone that says you guy are sellouts, everybodys gotta eat! WORD UP FROM THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST!
  37. Slug is one of the greatest MC's of all time. As a long time fan, i am so happy to see this. And all you moron shut up with $@#~ mainstream, $@#~ sell outs, underground for life, blah blah blah.

hip hop is hip hop, it is a tree that has many VERY different branches.

and a quote from Slug himself, "I am a sell out. any one who sells one copy of their CD automatically is a sell out! We are all sell outs! get used to it and do your thing! and have fun!"

    Atmosphere is amazing, truth.
  38. I've listened to you guys for years. I'm really glad that you guys are finally being reconized.I think hiphop needs a breath of fresh air now a days.
  39. slug and ant is the best thing to happen to music, show what 'hip hop' is. and not have to be #1 on a countdown. the way it should be. if this is anyones 1st time hearin them jus go back to trl
  40. congrats to anthony and sean I'm a huge fan... be seein you London in June since I missed you in Boston!

    I love you,
    Don't ever ~**%%$ question that...
  41. From the very first time I heard Atmosphere, I've been hooked. Love the way Slug puts together phrases and rhymes that go right to the heart. He has an insight to humanity and is able to zero in on it and touch you. As for selling out,,,Atmoshperes time has come to cross some barriers and bring their message to the masses, similar to the Democrats getting on Fox programing. It's time to put the "outernet" to work, let's all get work, let's all get to work.
  42. "It's all sunshine, nothin but sunshine"
  43. THIS DUDE'S GOT LYRICS SIMILAR TO MINE...CHECK OUT MY WEBSITE AND SONGS...I THINK YOU WILL AGREE...ESPECIALLY MY SONG J.O.B. AND MASTERMIND.

    REZIDUAL
  44. Atmosphere, my biggest influence. I'm happy they getting what they deserve. They've always brought the most original *@$@ to the game.

and as far as that dude who said something about "white people singing about how life is hard instead of brown people" is just ridiculous. if you aint having "hard life" troubles, what kind you having? becuz im sure it's the same as somebody else...or everyone else.

if you don't got the new cd, i recommend getting it...then get all the older stuff behind that new cd on the rack.

welcome to the world of REAL hip hop.
  45. Atmosphere is great. Good job guys.
  46. I'LL LET YOU KNOW NOW...ATMOSPHERE..YEAH THEY BEEN DOIN THE DAMN THING..BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT MINNESOTA'S ABOUT..I'M AN ARTIST FROM MINNESOTA. AND THAT *?#~ THAT THEY RAP IS SOME *~*$*%@$ REALLY..IT'S TONS OF TALENT HERE..DON'T LET SLUG DEFACE THE IMAGE OF THE TWIN CITIES...WANNA HERE SOME REAL MUSIC..CHECK MY WEB SITE....MYSPACE.COM/1KINGOFTHENORTH...ME AND ALL MY ARTISTS WILL BLOW ATMOSPHERE OUT THE WATER... REMEMBER NIGHT OWL PRODUCTION..THAT'S WHAT'S POPPIN
  47. TO ALL MTV HEADS....IF YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT REAL MINNESOTA MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE...GO TO MY WEBSITE

    MYSPACE.COM/1KINGOFTHENORTH
ATMOSPHERE IS NOT THE TYPE OF MUSIC MINNESOTA DOES..DONT LET SLUG GIVE YA'LL THE WRONG IMPRESSION..IM SERIOUS
  48. Ive been following Atmos since 2000, back when I was in highschool, anyone who says that Sean and Anthony is not what minnesota hip-hop is about or even minnesota music is an idiot. They are amazing. Rhymesayers label has been destroying the rap game latley by using intellegence to spit lyrics. Y'all have only heard the half of what Atmos is about if you only have listened to their last few albums...
  49. i've been listening to atmosphere for seven years. they're absolutely amazing, but it sucks they're doing this mtv thing...i never expected them to sell-out like that...
  50. HEY UR S**T is the best way to finally get the spot light you earned it its nice to see the people finally recognize you...tell em to listen to your other stuff and catch up!
