$5 Cover star Amy LaVere's Southern soul blues have a sort of gypsy swagger about them. Thumped out steady on doghouse bass, her songs wander dark avenues, exposing old secrets like a love so deep, deep down and vicious that even murder can't put it out.
Born into a music-loving clan of Texas nomads, LaVere's family moved 13 times in the first 14 years of her life. She started playing in bands at a very early age, dabbling in punk before settling into her country-fed folk roots.
But music's not the only trick up Amy's sleeve. Look for the sometimes-actress in Walk The Line and Black Snake Moan, laying the foundation for her hardest role to date -- herself -- in Craig Brewer's $5 Cover.
Well, actually, she's not exactly playing herself. More like she's elaborating on facets of her personality and old incarnations of her career. For example, she's no longer a caterer, but she plays one on TV. As for the angry love triangle that unfolds between LaVere, her roommate Clare and her drummer Nick, you'll have to figure out if that one's real on your own.
In the clips below, Amy LaVere introduces herself, gives you a glimpse of her $5 Cover character's dramatic life and performs a few of her soulful gypsy songs. Prepare to get her hoarse whisper in your head with a vengeance.
