Most VMA rehearsals consist of an artist rehearsing the same song and sections of a song over and over; dissecting choreography until every dancer hits their mark and has every move down in militaristic lockstep (not that I'm complaining about watching Lady Gaga or Beyonce's rehearsal).
Clearly though Green Day has no dancers, and they've been performing live for longer than Gaga and Beyonce combined. But just because Green Day are tried and true rock vets doesn't mean they phone in a rehearsal.
They tore into "East Jesus Nowhere," sounding fresher and newer than ever (side note -- Billie Joe looks like he's aging in reverse), and after that, Green Day treated the VMA producers and crew to an impromptu concert, playing a medley of "Holiday," "American Idiot," "Know Your Enemy," "Murder City," and "Longview," against a splashy backdrop dressed in images worthy of an album cover. I've never had the chance to see Green Day live before, but watching Tre Cool bust out the rolling drum solo from "Longview" on a riser atop the Radio City stage while everyone on the floor recited, "Bite my lip and close my eyes," by heart along with Billie Joe has been one of the greatest MTV insider experiences I've ever had. And I cannot WAIT to see that Green Day energy live tomorrow night.
