It's becoming an increasingly common occurrence. Rapper makes an influential and popular album (or series of albums) and then, in an effort to alleviate some of the pressure that comes along with such success, makes a creative left turn.
Think Jay-Z, with his American Gangster soundtrack following up The Black Album, or Kanye West's new wave move on 808s & Heartbreak. Add to the list Lil Wayne and his forthcoming, rock-inspired Rebirth LP.
A little over a year ago, while we were all still basking in the syrup-tinted glow of The Carter III, Weezy started to leak out tracks that were supposed to be included on Rebirth, namely the emo-AutoTune of "Hot Revolver" and "Prom Queen."
Now, in recent weeks, with Rebirth due (eh??) on Decemebr 21st, Wayne has let a couple more dogs off the leash.
First off is the Giorgio Moroder-sounding synth rock track "On Fire" (or "She's On Fire," as it's been referred to in some places). Produced by Cool & Dre (Juvenile's "Rodeo," Gym Class Heroes' "Peace Sign/Index Down"), was inspired by the music from the gangster epic Scarface, according to producer Dre.
Next up is the possibly most-experimental (and likely least-finished) of Weezy's new material, "Da Da Da." Little is known about this furiously rhythmic track, which finds Wayne rhyming over punk-funk drums in a scatter-shot fashion.
So what's your verdict? Does Lil Wayne have a rocker's heart? Or should he stick to rhymes?
+ Listen to Lil Wayne's "On Fire" here, and "Da Da Da" here.
