The music of The XX is so simple and so beautiful -- minimal guitar lines, basic drum-machine patterns, boy-girl vocals -- that it's often hard to imagine what visuals would go well with it. But this new video for the song "Islands" (taken from the group's brilliant 2009 debut album, "xx") trumps anything we could have ever imagined.
Directed by the very talented Saam, the video is composed of a series of tracking shots. We see the trio, listlessly sitting, as dancers engage in the same, choreographed routine, over and over again. But with each run-through, there seems to be a slight change, a small difference in gesture or movement, that suggests unrest under the surface -- much like the band's pristine, subtly menacing sound.
Check out the "Islands" video below. "xx" is out now.
