It's a celebration, people! Last Friday, we all got our first taste of Kanye West's new album, Good Ass Job, in the form of the immense, heavy, storming, awesome single, "Power." Here's 5 things you need to know about what will undoubtedly be one of the anthems of the summer.
1.) It's classic Kanye.
He's in full "Jesus Walks" mode; at once building his own myth while taking a long, hard look at himself. "Power" also has the patented mix of social commentary ("The system's broken/the school's closed/the prison's open") with punchline material ("With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands").
2.) It samples King Crimson.
The track relies heavily on a sample of the '70s prog-rock giants King Crimson and their song "21st Century Schizoid Man." After relying mostly on keyboards and drum programming for 808s & Heartbreak, Kanye seems to be going back to sample-based production for his new album.
3.) Drake apparently passed on the beat.
Not that there's anything wrong with "Over," but what were you thinking dude!?
+ Kanye recorded "Power" in Hawaii.
Ironically, for a track full of such emotional catharsis, barbed wit and passion, this song was recorded in the chillest place on the planet. I guess he wasn't just kicking off his mandals and wading in the Pacific.
+ Kanye goes after SNL.
If you were waiting for Kanye to address the whole Taylor Swift/MTV VMAs moment ... you'll have to keep waiting. Only "Saturday Night Live" catches heat for its lampooning of the whole stage-rushing incident. "SNL" staff writer Hannibal Buress took the bait, firing back (via Twitter), "Kanye talking real tough since he's not using that dumbass voice box. What was up with that emo-robot album," and attempting to enlist the help of head writer/Weekend Update host Seth Meyers, producer Lorne Michaels and fictional character MacGruber.
