Florence + The Machine, quite simply, gave a magisterial, star-making performance tonight, with her rendition of "Dog Days Are Over." Florence might not have been the best-known act coming into the 2010 MTV VMAs, but Florence + The Machine's performance will definitely go down as one of this year's highlights.
With choreography that resembled synchronized swimming, ballet and modern dance, dozens of percussionists and a heavenly choir backing her incredible voice, Florence brought the house down. At various points in her performance, you could hear the VMA audience at the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles, erupt into joyous cheers and applause.
Florence + The Machine's VMA performance was especially created and performed for this kind of grandiose stage. It was visual, musical and emotional, translating perfectly both live and on screen.
