“32 is still growing up,” sang the 20-year-old Taylor Swift. And we all know who she was singing to. Finally breaking her silence over Kanye West‘s controversial interruption of her 2009 MTV VMAs acceptance speech for the Best Female Video Award, Taylor Swift addressed Kanye West in the best way she knew how: through song.

Going shoeless, in a simple white dress and her hair done in an old-Hollywood style (appropriate for the location, right?), Taylor Swift debuted a new song, “Innocent.” Taylor’s new VMA song was packed with lyrics that addressed the infamous Kanye interruption and the whirlwind of controversy that followed. A week after Kanye West tweeted an epic apology to Taylor, Taylor herself offered her response, in her own way, forgiving Kanye West (if not letting him entirely off the hook). “Everyone of us has messed up, too… I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new,” Taylor sang, exonerating Kanye through the revealing lyrics of “Innocent.”

“It’s alright, your string of lights is still bright to me…. You’re still innocent… Who you are is not what you did,” she sang, to the audible gasps and admiration of the VMA crowd at the Nokia Theater. It was an unbelievably courageous performance from Taylor, and clearly an emotional one as well.

I guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your war path
Lost your balance on a tightrope
Lost your mind trying to get it back

Wasn’t it easier in your lunch box days?
Always a bigger bed to crawl into
Wasn’t it beautiful when you believed in everything
And everybody believed in you?

It’s all right, just wait and see
You’re streaming lights are still bright to me oh
Who you are is not what you’ve been
You’re still an innocent
You’re still an innocent

There’s some things you can’t speak of
But tonight you’ll leave it all again
You wouldn’t be shattered on the floor now
If only you would sing only what you know …

Wasn’t it easy you’re in your … catching days?
And everything out of reach … brought down to you?
Wasn’t it beautiful running wild till you fell asleep
Before the monsters caught up to you?

It’s all right, just wait and see
Your streaming lights are still bright to me oh
Who you are is not who you’ve been
You’re still an innocent
It’s OK, life is a tough crowd
32 and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You’re still an innocent

Time turns flames to ambers
You’ll have new Septembers
Everyone of us has messed up too
Mind change like the weather
I hope you remember today is never too late
To be brave (ohh)

It’s all right, just wait and see
Your streaming lights are bright to me oh
Who you are is not where you’ve been
You’re still an innocent
It’s OK, life is a tough crowd
32 and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You’re still an innocent
Lost your balance on a tight rope
It’s never too late to get it back
