In honor of Britney Spears‘ birthday (It was Dec. 2, but we’re celebrating all month!), I took it upon myself to reveal my all-time favorite Britney moment: Britney’s performance at the 2000 MTV VMAs. Here goes:
It was the year 2000, and I had just entered my [redacted] year in high school. (That’s none of your business!) I was watching the MTV VMAs, like every other girl in America, and I was excited for Britney’s performance. I liked “…Baby One More Time” Britney, but I was about to love“Oops…I Did It Again“ Britney.
When the performance started and I saw Britney Spears in a black suit for her subdued rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” I was underwhelmed. But little did I know what was about to come next–Britney strutted down that runway like she owned the place, “Oops…I Did It Again” began to play, and homegirl ripped off the business casual to reveal that famous sequined getup. Britney danced her heart out, hit every single move and ended the song on the floor, panting and out of breath. A star was born!
The youngsters out there need to understand that this was pre-Lady Gaga bloody “Poker Face/Paparazzi” performance at the 2009 MTV VMAs. This was also pre-that Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake debacle at the XXXVIII Super Bowl. So when Britney Spears was shaking it on that stage in what a lot of people thought were just sequins, it was basically CRAZY TALK. Sexy, confident, talented CRAZY TALK. I thought to myself, “OK, this girl might be around for a while.”
