Eliza Doolittle's stage name may bring to mind the salons and drawing rooms of "My Fair Lady," but in reality this British singer's sound is very much a product of London's multicultural present. Growing up in the vibrant Camden neighborhood of London, Eliza (born Eliza Caird) makes music that reflects the sound of her surroundings, incorporating hip-hop, Caribbean and dance influences into her traditional radio-pop sound.
It's no shock that Eliza has adopted a stage name, if not a sort of persona, as her parents both have backgrounds in the theater. However, musically, Doolittle is refreshingly straightforward in her delivery.
With songs that will remind some of Lily Allen, she navigates the often funny, sometimes heartbreaking minutiae of modern love. Songs like "Pack Up," which saunters along with a sunny beat and whistling, find Doolittle being followed by a rainy cloud: "I get tired, and upset, and I’m trying to care a little less. When I Google I only get depressed."
