Here we go. Lady Gaga, "Born This Way." After months of speculation, the lead single and title track from the Mama Monster's highly anticipated new album is finally here. What's "Born This Way" like? Let's go to the tape and see.
"Born This Way" is pretty much what we thought it would be. A sociopolitical anthem and Gaga's musical statement of solidarity with her passionate LGBT fan base.
As Idolator and several other sites have pointed out, the most immediate reference point is clearly Madonna's "Express Yourself." Filled with memorable lines, like, "don't be a drag, just be a queen," a pulsating beat and soaring keys, Gaga sounds in fine, full form, belting out the chorus, "I'm beautiful in my way, because God makes no mistakes. I'm on the right track, baby, I was born this way."
In closing, let's say this: Lady Gaga, over the last few years, has become one of the few most legitimate, most talented pop icons of our generation. But, in a way, her style and persona have outpaced her music. "Bad Romance" and "Poker Face" are great (and dark) love songs, but they weren't nearly as outspoken as the woman who sang them. With "Born This Way," Lady Gaga's music has finally caught up with her and everything she stands for -- acceptance, change and hope. We can't wait to hear more.
