As part of MTV’s Indie Music Month, we’re premiering videos from some of the most exciting artists in the indie music scene. Today, long-gestating MC Saigon brings us the video for “Bring Me Down,” the second single from his years-in-the-making debut The Greatest Story Never Told. See, Saigon’s been bubbling up in the underground for years now, with his album originally set to be released in 2004… which finally saw the light of day in 2011. But who’s counting, really?
In “Bring Me Down,” Saigon alternates between gritty and slick, roaming the New York City subway system with hand-held cameras, then literally waving the flag for hip-hop as jet planes fly overhead. It’s hard to tell which is more bombastic: the graphically inserted jets or the vocal-enhanced anthemic chorus.
As daily subway riders, we can sadly attest to the accuracy of chest-thumping rappers rhyming along the train tracks, but Saigon’s one of the few we’d actually stop to hear. Look for a special cameo by famed hip-hop producer and Saigon co-conspirator Just Blaze around the 1:50 mark. Dude’s been waiting seven years; the least you can do is give him four minutes.
