Creative hair stylists rejoice! You’ve got a new anthem in “Hair,” the fourth single off Lady Gaga‘s upcoming album, Born This Way, the whole of which is slated for release on Interscope Records May 23. The song is now available for purchase on iTunes, and for your listening pleasure.

As a lead up to today’s release, Gaga has been revealing some of the song’s lyrics via her Twitter account — which by the way is now at 10 million Twitter followers and growing. Anyway, all of the lyrics follow the very Gaga theme of personal expression through physical appearance: “I don’t wanna change, and I don’t wanna be ashamed. I’m the spirit of my Hair, it’s all the glory that I bare. I am my #Hair,” quoth she. In other words, grow and develop your freakiness, even if it’s directly out of your scalp.

Gaga cites Bruce Springsteen as an influence here, but we think it sounds more like y2k-era Cher (specifically, “Song For The Lonely”), what with its driving electro dance beat and passionate vocals. Critical reactions have been mixed so far, with Rolling Stone comparing it to Pat Benatar and Nine Inch Nails(?!), and well known Gaga-sseur Maura Johnston ranked “Hair” as one of Born This Way‘s weaker tracks. Is “Hair” destined for Gaga’s pantheon of hits, or will it be relegated to the backs of karaoke song books? Listen and decide for yourself.
