Lupe Fiasco brought in Trey Songz to sing the funked-out hook on his new song, "Out Of My Head," and MTV brought the two of them together to perform it live for the first time at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.
Triggaman, dressed in a white leather jacket, started off the performance with his signature soulful sound and then conceded to Lupe Fiasco, clad in all black, committed yet cavalierly spitting game and then segueing into "The Show Goes On," the latest single off his third album, Lasers. Perseverance in the face of adversity is the common refrain of both Lupe's track and the song it samples, Modest Mouse's "Float On," and the combination is a complexly layered, quasi elegiac hip-rock song that revels in minor-chord anxieties, intensified by the live electric violin and a truly talented backup singer. Lupe and Trey Songz's live pairing plus the backing of a fully loaded live band made this one of the best collaborations of the night -- besides Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner's dude-on-dude free love fest.
