Soul legend Marvin Gaye is experiencing a mini-revival in hip-hop. Last week, Drake released “Marvin’s Room,” named after Gaye’s studio where Drake recorded the track. Now, heavily buzzed rapper Big Sean recruited Kanye West for “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay,” the third single from the rapper’s debut album, Finally Famous.

Produced by Pop Wansel (“Your Love”), the title refers to what Big Sean bought you, girl, to set the mood. It’s two admittedly good choices. One less effective choice: layering your beat with irksome, bed-squeaking noises throughout the entire track. (Sorry, but Trillville did it first and did it best.) Too fast for a slow jam and too slow for a club track, the mid-tempo song has some trouble establishing its own identity. Lyrically, the verses sound phoned in, as if Roscoe Dash’s catchy hook — the best part of the song — could save it all. (Did Kanye just say, “Talk to the hand”?)

When MTV News caught up with Big Sean last week, he discussed the nature of the track. “It’s self-explanatory, man; it’s just us having fun,” said the rapper. “I feel like that’s one of the things that people, especially [in] hip-hop, sometimes forget to include in their music, man — you just gotta have fun with it. So it’s nothing too serious, me and [Kanye] have tons of songs coming out. This is definitely one of the first of many.” Fair enough. Chardonnay does often lead to fun, and Marvin Gaye does often lead to… use protection, friends.
