Blink-182 was my favorite band in middle school. The yearning curiosity of 1998's "What's My Age Again?" coupled with the pensive sadness of "All The Small Things" in 1999 pretty much defined my adolescence. So I had to ask myself: Will Blink-182's new song "Up All Night" move me as they once did (not that many) years ago? The answer: Yes!
"Up All Night" is as catchy as Blink-182's early material, but gone is the simplicity of many of their previous hits. The song has a markedly harsher vocal sound and more aggressive guitar pattern than most of the Blink stuff we're used to, but let's not forget that it's been more than 10 years since the release of Enema Of The State. The Blink boys are now men, and their musical maturity is only echoed in the serious lyrical content of "Up All Night": "Everyone's cross to bear's a crown they wear on endless holiday/Everyone raises kids in a world that changes life to a bitter game/Let me get this straight, do you want me here/As I struggle through each and every year/And all these demons, they keep me up all night."
It sounds like Blink-182 has definitely grown up, but they've still managed to keep that boyish charm that made us fall for them in the '90s. Catch more new songs from Blink's upcoming album when they hit the road with My Chemical Romance this summer on the 2011 Honda Civic Tour.
