We teased you last month with a track list for Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album, I'm With You, but now we finally have some actual music with the release of lead single "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie." Starting out with Flea's slinky, propulsive bass line, RHCP singer Anthony Kiedis talks of "rocking you like the '80s" before the band employs a melodic, mid-tempo chorus reminiscent of later albums Californication and By the Way.
Kiedis spoke with MTV News earlier this week, revealing that the song, born out of an hour-long jam session, was originally set to be a B-side until the band was convinced to release it as the lead single. That ridiculously catchy bass line from Flea was no accident either. "He woke up, had his tea, sat down: 'I'm going to write a classic bass line. You can't stop me,'" Kiedis said. "Played his bass line until he felt it was cooked into a classic, brought it to us and said, 'This is Classic Number One."
"Maggie" marks the official return of the band after a self-imposed two-year hiatus and the first song released with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined the band in 2010 following the departure of on-and-off guitarist John Frusciante.
"The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" is the lead single off I'm With You, the Peppers' 10th album, which comes out Aug. 30.
