You probably expected Lady Gaga to open the VMAs wearing something Latex, sequined, possibly made of real flesh or any combination thereof. But Lady Gaga as we know her didn't attend the VMAs and instead sent her male alter ego, Jo Calderone (or Gaga's ex, to hear Jo tell it) in her stead.
Lady Gaga performed "Yoü & I" fully committed to the character of Jo Calderone, and spent the rest of VMA night in character, wearing baggy black pants and a white t-shirt, sitting slouched over in the front row at the VMAs, presenting Britney Spears and going in for a kiss in character as Jo and even accepting Best Female Video as a guy. No pretty Gaga, no monster claws, no Noritaka Tatehana platforms. Just basic black and white and plenty of sneery male aggression.
So what did you think of Lady Gaga's decision to put away the she and bring out the he to the 2011 MTV VMAs? Were you into Gaga's monologue, gender-bending performance and commitment to character? Or did you miss "the old Gaga"?
Vote in our poll, watch Lady Gaga/ Jo Calderone's VMA "Yoü & I" performance, and watch Jo Calderone accept Lady Gaga's Best Female Video VMA.
