What's the best way to re-enter the music game after a three-year hiatus? Release a song about the slang word for "strawberry," obviously. Lil Mama is back with "Scrawberry," and even though the song's meaning isn't exactly apparent, it's kind of addictive.
While she doesn't exactly describe what this mystery berry is, Lil Mama's colorful "Scrawberry" video does a great job of reintroducing herself to the hip-hop game. The song samples Special Ed's classic 1989 record "I Got It Made" and features a multiple-wig-donning Lil Mama and her entourage of Harajuku girls dancing around to the beat. Think Nicki Minaj's wigs plus Gwen Stefani's Harajuku friends jamming to an MC Lyte-inspired track. So basically if my dream closet had a soundtrack, it'd be this song on repeat.
Lil Mama's "Scrawberry" is extremely catchy, with lyrics that are so WTF that the song's sure to sneak into your head. "That's Scrawberry milk pink.../And my dashboard clean/And my trunk don't stank." Um, thanks? Hey, weirdo lyrics worked for Kelis (no one brings milkshakes to yards), and we're still waiting on Fergie to let us in on what it means to be "Fergalicious." Get that scrawberry paper, Lil Mama. Or something.
