Tony Bennett is one busy classic crooner. After recently spending time in the studio with both the late, great Amy Winehouse and then with Lady Gaga, today we have news of Tony's collaboration with country cutie Carrie Underwood, slated to appear on his forthcoming Duets II album. What we loved about "The Lady Is A Tramp," Tony's duet with Gaga, is that Mother Monster ditched her typical pop vocal stylings in favor of a more Broadway-tinged vibe. So we were excited to hear that Carrie Underwood had done the same. That's not to say that we don't love Carrie's classic country drawl, but when you're singing with someone as trained as Tony Bennett, it's best to heed to the music master you're sharing studio space with.
On "It Had To Be You," Carrie Underwood's tone is matched perfectly with Tony Bennett's, and it's hard to believe they're actually singing in two-part harmony. It's also hard to believe that Carrie chose country as her genre of choice since the girl seriously sounds like she was made for the Broadway stage. She doesn't look so bad, either.
As their two-part harmony sails into the chorus, I can almost envision this updated version of "It Had To Be You" as the soundtrack to the next romcom you want to see but won't admit to. Just think about it -- Anne Hathaway looks into Ryan Gosling's eyes. They embrace and profess their love for one another as Carrie and Tony sing "It had to be you/Wonderful you/It had to be you" lightly in the background. Movie magic right there! Now gimme an IMDb credit.
