Do you guys remember that AMAZING scene in 1984's "Footloose" where Ren (Kevin Bacon) is tractor racing with that DB Chuck (Jim Youngs)? And remember the Bonnie Tyler song "Holding Out For A Hero" that was playing dramatically while they raced... dramatically? Well for the 2011 remake of "Footloose," South Carolina country singer-songwriter and rising star Ella Mae Bowen (she's just 15, by the way, and she just got signed to Big Machine, Taylor Swift's label!) recorded a cover of the song, and we're seriously smitten.
Ella's version of Bonnie's '80s hit sounds nothing like the original -- instead of a fast-paced, poppy dance vibe, Ella has transformed the song into a soft and gorgeous acoustic country ballad that wouldn't sound out of place coming out of Jewel's mouth.
In the "Holding Out For A Hero" video, we see a very lovely Ella wearing a simple long-sleeved dress as she sings under a mass of twinkling lights. She belts out "I need a hero!" as viewers are treated to scenes from the new "Footloose," showing Ariel (Julianne Hough) and Ren (Kenny Wormald) giving each other the ol' let's-do-it eye and totally breaking the rules at the previously verboten town dance.
I hope I didn't just ruin the plot or anything, but it's kinda not even a little OK if you've never seen the original! Get yourself some Netflix, then you'll understand why Ella's updated version of "Holding Out For A Hero" gives us the warm fuzzies.
"Footloose," starring Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald, is in theaters now.
