The Breckenridges’ father passed away while recording Thrice’s latest album, Major/Minor. Whether or not the lyrics to “Words In The Water” directly reflect this loss, the remix further conjures a feeling of loneliness and sadness with its sparse instrumentation, which eventually builds to catharsis and hope. With quiet beginnings, Kensrue sings, “Standing knee-deep in cold water swiftly moving/Somehow I knew I’d lost something.” He continues, “Neck-deep, treading water, the tide pulled me out to sea,” before the music swells with orchestral touches and crests to meet the chorus. The contemplative mood ultimately culminates with a “lifting of a curse from my heart” bringing “brilliant light in the dark.”
Major/Minor is out now on Vagrant Records.
