Indie pop-rock trio Foster The People not only have their 2012 Grammy nominations to be proud of, but they're also MTV's Posted artist for the month of December. All month long we're gifting video clips from the "Call It What You Want" clan -- live performances, behind-the-scenes snippets and exclusive interviews each week. There's no need to thank us, just consider them free stocking stuffers.
Up first, a video clip of Foster The People chatting about the gigantic success of their hit single... You might have heard of it -- "Pumped Up Kicks." They explain what they think draws fans to that particular tune, but are admittedly surprised with it's long-lasting popularity. We just think they're being waaay too modest -- that song is like, THE MOST.
FTP also let us in on their songwriting process where we learn that they're into playing make-believe. They confess, "It's really liberating to write in character." They chat about how inspiring it is to create music that's less autobiographical: "Sometimes there's just not much going on in your life that's interesting, but then all of a sudden you switch it over to someone else... and you get these brand-new ideas again." And that completes today's lesson in Creating Lyrical Genius 101.
