Imagine inviting a brand-new friend you met a few weeks ago to your art residency in Greece and coming back to the States as part of a five-piece indie pop-rock band. That’s not a Sophia Coppola movie; that’s actually how Grouplove got started — Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi met on New York City’s Lower East Side and jetted off to Greece together days later. After spending the summer in Crete making music with Sean Gadd, Andrew Wessen and Ryan Rabin, the group decided to try to make the band work in L.A. Their song “Tongue Tied,” from the group’s first studio album, Never Trust A Happy Song, was featured in an iPod commercial, so we’d say it’s working pretty well.
Get to know Grouplove, this week’s MTV PUSH artist, in our exclusive video interviews and performances. Catch the band’s live renditions of “Tongue Tied” and “Itchin’ On A Photograph,” and get some insight from the group on the healing power of music and their warm, fuzzy thoughts on live shows: “It feels pretty euphoric when it’s going well. You feel all the music coming individually… coming to this point.” We dig, jive turkeys.
Grouplove’s debut studio album, Never Trust A Happy Song, dropped in late 2011. Check them out on tour in the U.K. and the U.S. this spring, including two dates at Coachella.
