Every once in a while we get the chance here at MTV to sit down with someone who really makes us think we might have to breathe into a paper bag to complete the interview without incident. This time, I’m talking about Florence + The Machine’s Florence Welch. I sat down with Flo (we’re friends now so that’s what I call her), and I’m happy to say I made it through the interview without hyperventilating! (I came close, but I hid it because I’m a professional.)
Watch our interview with Florence + The Machine’s Florence Welch after the jump.
Florence was candid about so many things during our chat, including her creative process during the making of Ceremonials, why she chose to cover Drake’s “Take Care” (which happens to be one of the best covers of all time… OF ALL TIME) and her BFF, whom she lovingly refers to as “Sad Sack.” She even has a “Sad Sack” tattoo, which definitely means they’ll be BFFs forever and ever. “She’s really beautiful, but super miserable, which is kind of intoxicating. You know, when you meet someone who’s that gorgeous, they’re beauty becomes tenfold because they’re that severe.” Bonus points — Florence reveals that Sad Sack is in the “Shake It Out” video. Can you find her?
The wonderful Ms. Welch also opens up about the moment she knew “Dog Days Are Over” became a hit in the States and her ultimate concert lineup. Check this one out: “Kanye and Jay-Z, and then you’d have Fleetwood Mac, Beyoncé, and then I’d like maybe LCD Soundsystem to play, Arcade Fire, Crystal Castles… TV On The Radio, Spiritualized, Otis Redding could come…” Um, if they can figure out how to DEPOSIT CHECKS ON YOUR CELL PHONE, some inventor/magician should figure out how to make this festival happen. PLEASE.
