New Video: Lana Del Rey, ‘Summertime Sadness’

Lana Del Rey and Jamie King play star-crossed lovers in Lana’s new ‘Summertime Sadness’ video.

Remember how we got totally emotional for Lana Del Rey‘s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis moment in “National Anthem?” Well, now we’re getting even MORE teary-eyed over her tragic “Summertime Sadness” video. Yo, Lana, it’d be cool if you could stop making our mascara run. Even for like, 5 seconds.

Directed by Kyle Newman, the clip was shot using a retro, blown-out camera filter, and features cut-up footage of Lana and her onscreen lover, Jamie King, laughing and smiling together in the beautiful summer weather. Eventually, however, things turn sour and after a teary-eyed fight in a car and some incredibly despondent faces, Lana jumps off a cliff and plunges to her demise. (Sorry for the spoiler, but we had to.) Later, we learn that Jamie has done the exact same thing. It’s debatable whether or not the two reunite in a bizarre afterlife filled with coral-colored smoke, but it seems unlikely, as the clip closes with an image of Lana and her ghost walking alone down an empty road. Sad, sad times, y’all. But then again what else did you expect from a Lana video? Sunshine, glitter and ice cream cones? Probably not.
