This week’s roundup sees the dreamy return of Lady Gaga’s favorite alt-rockers, a disco diva diving into chilly Icelandic waters, and an almighty remix of one of the finest, most steamy uptempo cuts from Miss Jackson (if ya nasty.)
1.) Kylie Minogue featuring múm, “Whistle”
Kylie Minogue‘s just full of surprises lately. Last week, she was busy rubbing elbows with Jay-Z and signing on with Roc Nation as her new management for 2013. Now, the prolific pop princess is throwing us another curveball, this time teaming up with Icelandic experimental electronic group múm for an icy track from the “Jack & Diane” soundtrack, “Whistle.” The track is full of minimal, rippling electronica beats and sorrowful strings, as Kylie’s calming voice lushly flows across the unusual soundscape. It’s a majorly left-of-center move, recalling her experimental pop days back in the late ’90s with her record “Impossible Princess” — and probably the closest we’ll ever hear to a Björk duet.

2.) Janet Jackson, “Throb (Peter Rauhofer 2013 Remix)”
If ever there were an artist to set the mood for Valentine’s Day last week, it’s Janet Jackson. Back in ’93, the legendary songstress unleashed her dirty-minded dance floor anthem “Throb” on janet., which went on to become a club smash the next year. Now, two decades (!) later, the song’s back — harder, better, faster, and stronger — thanks to an almighty remix by legendary DJ Peter Rauhofer. Full of punishing, rave o’clock beats, the re-rub takes Janet’s funky, horn-happy original and turns it into filthy, dirty-dancing fodder, making the song throb like never before. Boom boom boom until noon noon noon!
3.) Lana Del Rey, “Summertime Sadness (Adam Freeland Remix)”
Though her world-weary persona may not immediately conjure visions of sweating up a storm on the dance floor, throwback chanteuse Lana Del Rey tends to inspire excellence in remix form. Take Adam Freeland‘s “Summertime Sadness” remix, which adds a freestyle punch of glittering synthesizers and kicky House beats to the forlorn production. Lana’s breathy vocals are chopped ‘n’ screwed to the extreme, resulting in a dazzling dance floor production that makes Lana’s summertime seem a whole lot brighter.
4.) Semi Precious Weapons, “Aviation High”
Glam-rock outfit Semi Precious Weapons is perhaps best known for kicking, hi-octane cuts like “Semi Precious Weapons” and “Magnetic Baby.” But now, Lady Gaga‘s favorite opening act is back with a lusher sound than ever before. “Aviation High” takes the group to dreamy new heights, putting aside the crashing drums and guitars in favor of a slow stride and pensive synthesizers. “We’re alive, alive/ We’re aviation high,” frontman Justin Tranter cries out on the chorus, not unlike a Coldplay stadium anthem. It’s a massive shift in style for the rowdy rockers, but a welcome one nonetheless, demonstrating their ability to evolve.
5.) Marina + The Diamonds, “E.V.O.L.”
Not everyone was so lovey-dovey on Valentine’s Day: In fact, Marina + The Diamonds cold-hearted, self-loathing alter-ego Electra Heart got downright evil — or rather, “E.V.O.L.” “It only takes two lonely people to f*** love up and make it evil,” the acid-tongued pop princess monotones along the damning, jaunty heartbreak anthem, produced by Liam Howe (of Electra Heart‘s fan favorite, “Teen Idle.”) Chocolate and roses is cute and all, but a little bit of doom and gloom never hurts. Thanks for the sweet treat, my bloody Valentine!
