Listen to Alicia Keys’ stripped-down “Not Even The King” rendition on “VH1 Storytellers.”
It’s Alicia Keys Appreciation Week around these parts! Or, at least that’s what we’re calling this unusual week, where we’re introducing one track per day from Alicia’s epic appearance on “VH1 Storytellers.” Yesterday, we unveiled Alicia’s stripped-down rendition of “No One,” and today we’re bringing you Alicia’s gorgeous acoustic performance of “Not Even The King,” which, according to “Storytellers,” is her favorite.
Listen Alicia Key’s perform “Not Even The king” on “VH1 Storytellers” after the jump.
After revealing to the audience that this is her son’s favorite song (when he goes to sleep, he asks her to sing “King,” which obviously is the CUTEST thing ever), Alicia digs into the the delicate Emeli Sande cowritten tune. Backed only by her own piano, Alicia gracefully chants: “Some people waste their lives counting their thousands/ I don’t care what they’re offering/ How much gold they bring/ They can’t afford what we got/ Not even the king/ They can’t afford what we got/ Not even the king.” Seriously, if this doesn’t (a) make you wanna cry, (b) make you wanna call your mommy, or (c) make you wanna call your boyfriend, something is seriously seriously up with your emotions/tear duct functionality. Proceed with caution and a box of tissues!
