Donald Glover gets Childish on “Arsenio Hall.”

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) turned up on the couch of “The Arsenio Hall Show” last night. In typical form, he was forthcoming and refreshingly candid about his multifaceted career, touching on everything from his decision to leave “Community” to those super-revealing Instagram letters of late.

The musician, comedian, and actor topped off the chat with what he does best — well, one of the things he does best — a performance of the song “Shadows.”

“Shadows” comes from Glover’s upcoming second full-length LP, Because The Internet. Speaking of the Internet, he pointed out that there’s a lot of misinformation on that crazy thing. “You can literally put anything on there about me, and you will find proof of it,” he said in answer to Hall’s questions about recent rumors. “You really can. Everybody thinks I’m Danny Glover’s son.”

He’s not, just for the record.

“It wasn’t rapping,” Gambino said of his decision to leave the TV sitcom. “I don’t consider myself a rapper. I can rap. But I don’t think I’m a rapper. I wanna do a bunch of stuff… I think that’s kind of dumb. Who wants to be… Rappers don’t want to be rappers,” he half-joked. “They’re usually artists and want to do a lot of stuff.” True indeed.

But in the meantime, about that rapping. Glover launched into “Shadows” after the interview, although “launched” might not be the right way to describe sitting cross-legged in shorts on a couch. Joined by bass player Thundercat, he opened the song with a sweetly sung chorus: “Love me better, kiss me better, she said.”

The song progressed from there to a sped-up rap verse that digs into his usual themes of love and the expectations of fame, cut through with a blend of sincerity and ironic observational details. Halfway through, Glover joined the rest of the band in the performance space where the song exploded into a rousing burst of guitar feedback and climbing falsetto. He’s off to a pretty good start with that “doing a lot of stuff” thing.
