Watch Jason Derulo Put A Daydreamy Spin On Lorde’s ‘Royals’ For BBC Radio 1′s ‘Live Lounge’ (VIDEO)

Jason Derulo puts a daydreamy spin on Lorde's "Royals" for BBC Radio 1 "Live Lounge."

“I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh… except that massive one I bought for Jordin.”

The latest one of our pop faves to drop by BBC Radio 1′s “Live Lounge” is Jason Derulo, and he’s brought a lighter, mellower rendition of Lorde‘s chart-topping single, “Royals,” with him. Although you might think an established top-40 musician would have trouble connecting with a song that’s all about being “the outsider,” Jason totally puts his own spin on the track. Trust us, your ears will love.

Wow, though, after featuring Jared Leto covering “Stay,” CHVRCHES covering “Falling,” HAIM covering “Wrecking Ball,” and Miley Cyrus covering “Summertime Sadness,” BBC Radio 1 has quickly risen to second place on our “Reasons we should move to the U.K.” list. You know, after “Because ‘Love Actually’ could happen for real! U NEVER KNOW.”

Accompanied by an unplugged ensemble of musicians and two tender-voiced backup singers, Jason breaks from the sparse, gloom-pop throb of the MTV Artist To Watch‘s original. Instead of a defiant stare down with authority, the “Live Lounge” cover feels more like a contented acceptance that Jason and his crew will “never be royals” — like, “how can we be bummed about what can’t be changed when the sun’s shining on this field of floooowers?”

This daydreamy, summer afternoon feel reaches its peak at the end of the chorus. When Jason and company harmonize on “And baby I’ll rule (I’ll rule) (I’ll rule),” they hit such a sweet spot like you wouldn’t believe. Vocal honey, absolutely!

Our only issue with the “Marry Me” singer’s cover comes when he sings the opening lyric: “I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh.” Because come on, Jason, we’ve all seen/ felt the gravitational pull from the engagement ring with which you proposed to Jordin Sparks. JUST SAYIN’.
