More flawless covers, courtesy of BBC Radio 1’s “Live Lounge” and Angel Haze.
Just when you thought BBC Radio 1’s “Live Lounge” cover sessions couldn’t getting any more amazing (see Jason Derulo’s rendition of “Royals” and Miley Cyrus’ twanged-out take on “Summertime Sadness“), they did. Their latest cover artist in residence? Angel Haze, who puts an eerie yet Hi-NRG spin on Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love.”
Lit only by some ghostly neon violet lighting, Angel seamlessly switches from Bey’s sung lyrics to Jay Z’s rapped ones without ever missing a beat.
Much like the pop-music power couple’s Grammy Awards performance, there’s plenty of #SURFBOARDT to go around in this cover. And #SKATEBOARDT. And #TOMFORDT. OK, that kinda won’t make sense if you haven’t watched the clip. Let’s just say that the “Echelon (It’s My Way)” rapper altered our favorite “Drunk In Love” lyric, yet somehow we’re not mad about it.
Speaking of “Tom Ford,” though, somewhere around the 3:20 mark, Angel’s band starts sampling some of the 8-bit, “Super Mario Bros.”-esque percussion from the Magna Carta… Holy Grail track. The subtle mashup makes perfect sense, and we’re sure the entire Carter-Knowles fam approves.
