The two faces of Childish Gambino.
A month after Childish Gambino won the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards crowd over with his live “Sweatpants” performance, Donald Glover has followed up with the track’s official video. Considering how cerebral most of the multi-hyphenate’s projects usually are, the clip is as heady and out-there as you might expect.
The Hiro Murai-directed video featuring Problem opens with a decidedly hungover looking Childish walking into a diner in search of a refuel, when things suddenly take a turn for the weird. The loop of plinky strings sets an eerie tone for the boastful, hard-charging rap in which — we think — he’s extolling the virtues of brunch? “Breakfast, lunch and dinner’s for beginners, you ain’t even know.” We don’t!
After the “3005” rapper steps outside to check his phone, he comes back into the diner to find that things aren’t exactly as he left them. You see, his friends have been replaced by… Himself. Not the worst news Childish Gambino’s fans have ever heard, we bet.
He pops outside again, and the Gambinos keep multiplying. Upon returning, everyone has transformed into his doppel: the diners, the waitress, a couple making out. *INCEPTION HORN*
It seems to be some sort of commentary on egotism and celebrity, a couple of Glover’s favorite themes. Or, maybe the eggs in this diner were just really, really expired. Either way, this is some pretty trippy stuff.
