about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

One of the many, many outfits Katy Perry rocked when she hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards a few weeks ago was a not-so-subtle nod to her boyfriend Russell Brand's favorite soccer (or football for non-Yanks) club, West Ham United.

You can imagine the flutter of hearts felt across London when Hammers fans saw Perry decked out in a claret and blue bustier, thinking to themselves, "Cor blimey, wish my missus would get dolled up like that!" (that was my cockney impersonation, btw).

Well, now your missus (or any other lass) can get their paws on Perry's West Ham lingerie. The club, responding to, "huge demand," have contracted the original designer, Siobhan Dillon, to make a limited run of the outfit, running a measly £300.

West Ham are currently mired in a fight for their Barclay's Premier League survival (that means they're not doing well at playing soccer), so I guess they need all the support they can get (pun, sadly, intended).

For her edition of MTV Unplugged, Katy Perry scrubbed the glitter off her brash, brassy anthems. Taking full advantage of the intimate, candlelit setting, Perry radically reworked some of her most well-known and most-adored jams, and showcased a whole new side of herself as a performer, arranger, and songwriter.  Gone are the pulsing beats, washes of synths and walls of guitar, replaced by a hushed, jazzy set-up featuring, at times, upright bass, strings and horns. But the songs remain the same: witty, vulnerable and crammed with hooks.

"I Kissed A Girl"

Katy's second single gets a cabaret jazz send up, attendant with stand-up bass and torch singer vocals.

"Lost"

Described as one of the more personal songs on her album, One Of The Boys, Katy gives a little background to the ballad "Lost," before performing a heart-rendering version of the track.

"Ur So Gay"

A sly insult to an ex-boyfriend with a flair for H&M scarves, it's the song that announced Katy Perry's arrival to the music world. "Ur So Gay" gets a a horn-heavy revamp.

Katy Perry's highly anticipated MTV Unplugged performance will be debuting on MTV and MTV.com this Monday, November 16. Rather than sleeplessly frittering away your weekend, hyperventilating and listening to "Waking Up In Vegas" on repeat, we thought it'd be a good idea to give you an Unplugged refresher course.

Here are some of the best performances of MTV's legendary live show, featuring some obscure performances and some unforgettable ones, with nary an amp in sight.

Nirvana, "Come As You Are" (1993)

For their episode of Unplugged, Nirvana revealed an aching vulnerability to their razor-sharp songs. This was an iconic performance, producing some of the most lasting, indelible imagery of Kurt Cobain.

Paramore, "That's What You Get" (2009)

Audience interaction is one of the best parts of these intimate Unplugged performances. In the case of Paramore, it's more about audience participation, as the crowd helps out Hayley Williams with the "whoa-oh's" of "That's What You Get."

Alicia Keys, "Unbreakable" (2005)

Unplugged puts the artist and their artistry at the forefront. In this 2005 performance, Alicia Keys shows the extent of her capabilities as a performer with a gorgeous rendition of "Unbreakable."

MGMT: You go for the lush, electronic-but-organic instrumentation and bouncy beats, but you stay for the insanely catchy melodies.

Jams like "Kids" and "Electric Feel" have a timeless quality to them; they're just examples of rock solid songwriting. And it's this basic, elemental quality that comes across in this version of MGMT's mega-jam, "Kids," by British band The Kooks. It reminds a lot of the version "Electric Feel" cover that Katy Perry did a while back; with voice, guitar and a little bit of keys for embellishment.

Listen to The Kooks' cover of MGMT's "Kids" here (as well as their covers of Peter, Bjorn and John and Gnarls Barkley), and check out the MGMT's "Kids" video, for the sake of comparison, below.

These amazing photos of Lady Gaga in Italian Vanity Fair just came out, and really, people. It's not even fair anymore. It's like Katy Perry said yesterday on Twitter: "Yep, Gaga's game is on point, she's on another planet that no one else can get to right now... She's eating, breathing, living it. RAD."

As if Lady Gaga's next-next level video for "Bad Romance" (which scorched retinas -- and a bed -- all across the Internet yesterday) wasn't enough, here are some brand-new pics of her from the Italian version of Vanity Fair magazine.

This is just bananas. Is that a faux-baby-bump corset? (PREGNANT Gaga!!!??) Is this supposed to be Italian Futurism meets steampunk meets Russian ballet? What. Are. Those. Shoes? All signs point to Gaga as Italian ballerina in Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli's upcoming one-of-a-kind piece for Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art's 30th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, November 14. In the exclusive piece, entitled Ballet Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again), Lady Gaga will premiere her new ballad, "Speechless," flanked by dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet. In other words, Lady Gaga the performance artist will become a living piece of art.

Ke$ha is a bad girl gone worse. Last night's makeup and glitter still liberally applied to her face, she's putting off the morning after by charging right into the next night.

Ke$ha (real name Kesha Sebert) is a California girl. With a musical family, she was probably bound to wind up on stage and in front of the camera but, credit to her, her rise has been hard-earned.

Before going to work on her debut album (due out next year), Ke$ha could be heard singing background vocals for Britney, Miley and The Veronicas and turning up in her pal Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" video.

Now she's on her own, and by the looks of the video for her debut single, "Tik Tok," she plays as hard as it works. It's a down-and-dirty electro jam with Auto-Tune flirtations. Check out Ke$sha's "Tik Tok" video below, and watch Ke$ha's live MTV UK video performance.

Katy Perry rode a shoe, wore a dress that may or may not have been attacked by giant mice (or moths), and a bustier that looked see-through. And it's not even midnight. Check out all of 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards host Katy Perry's outrageously awesome outfits from the show, from her gorgeous floral red carpet gown by Marchesa, to her West Ham onesie, her nearly naked flesh-toned bustier, her cabaret costume and more examples of Katy Perry in tulle go so wrong it's so right.
