Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.
The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards were an epic night in Berlin, with host Katy Perry, online host Pete Wentz, live performances by Beyonce, U2, Jay-Z, Tokio Hotel, Foo Fighters, Shakira, Green Day, and Leona Lewis.
Check out the entire list of winners, and watch the entire show and red carpet interviews on demand, right now!
The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards are just around the corner. If you haven't booked your ticket to Berlin, well, you're probably screwed. But fortunately Buzzworthy's gonna give you a first-hand look at all of the international stars, performers and performances, and fan-picked awards on Thursday, November 5.
Here's what you need to know about the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin.
Anyway, here Leona Lewis just made a song (with the help of Ryan Tedder) about just WANTING TO BE HAPPY, and it's about how she can't even get the guy she's secretly in love with, and then she has to go watch him get married to some chick, and then SOMEONE HITS her? She's JUST TRYING TO BE HAPPY. GARRRH. I'M SO ANGRY I COULD BREAK MY MACBOOK AIR!
Just prepare yourself, the Backstreet Boys go straight for the de rigueur vampire jugular with their latest comeback. (And has it really been two years since the last album? Backstreet! How I've missed you).
Considering "Straight Through My Heart," directed by Kai Regan (Panic! At the Disco's "New Perspective," Cobra Starship's "Good Girls Go Bad") is all about attacks of love and symbolic bleeding, how could Backstreet Boys not jump on the vampire bandwagon? (You had your shot Leona Lewis; "Bleeding Love" could've gone in a totally vampiric direction! I smell a remake!) Backstreet Boys also called upon producer RedOne (the magic behind Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" and Sean Kingston's "Fire Burning." And did I mention sexy vampires? Possible girl-on-girl sexy vampires? We assume we won't be seeing THAT in New Moon...
... Not to suggest Backstreet Boys is completely shedding its '90s boy band roots (a linchpin, if there ever was one, in a glorious era of TRL): The new album, This Is Us, features songwriting from Swedish mogul Max Martin, who wrote all-time classic "I Want It That Way" and Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time." In addition, the guys bust out unabashed boy band moves from right out the gate in their "Straight Through My Heart" video -- just like the old days! Hey, if you're going to be a boy band, be a damn boy band! And, equally as important, a vampire!
+ We're having (slightly nightmarish) flashbacks to our uber-Christian, ultra-conservative childhood after stumbling upon this gem, a duet with gospel group Mary Mary and R&B songmaster Ne-Yo. (Rap-Up)
+ Celebrity Twitter fights are fun for the whole family, especially when they're brought to you by parenting gurus Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler. (Evil Beet Gossip)
+ If you haven't seen the VMA promos that MTV has been running for this year (the full-length West Side Story-themed ones that feature Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Cobra Starship, Leighton Meester, and Russell Brand all singing their own verses...) then stop what you're doing right now (unless you're searching YouTube looking for fan vids of Britney's performance last night at MSG like we've been doing all morning) and WATCH the full length version here!
+ Oh -- and how cute are Katy and Taylor having dinner together the other night in England?? (Socialite Life)
+ It was just announced today that Paula Abdul's first post-Idol gig will be hosting VH1 Divas later this month, which will star Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and more. (Pop on the Pop)
+ And in case you missed yesterday's totally fun NYC scavenger hunt hosted by Britney via Twitter, check this out! (Perez Hilton)
+ File this one away in the "Whitney, what were you thinking?" category: Until the August 31 street release date, Whitney Houston is leaking her entire brand-new CD on, QVC.com??????
+ Since everyone else is doing something vampire-related these days, Henry Rollins figured he'd jump on the bandwagon (along with Iggy Pop and Moby) and star in Suck, a spoof movie about the vampire trend. We seriously hope they get Leslie Nielsen to make a cameo (Dracula: Dead And Loving It anyone??). Pretty sure he's probably booked tho. Watch the Suck trailer for a ridiculous look at Moby, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and Henry Rollins. (Twenty Four Bit)
+ And for all the Twilighters out there who just can't get close enough to R.Patts and his famous Edward Cullen pout, now you can have him watching over your nibbly bits while you're hosing yourself down in the shower. (Street Level)
+ Leona Lewis is set to debut her sophomore album Echo in November of this year, after being the best-selling new artist of 2008. Seriously excited for this one...
+ American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has evidently recorded some amazeballs song for the upcoming disaster flick 2012, and this photo shoot he did ain't bad either. He's so oddly attractive, we can't put our fake fingernail on it. (Socialite Life)
+ Jack-of-all-trades Queen Latifah has a new song out featuring Busta Rhymes and others AND she has a new album coming out next week. Listen to the track here. (Rap-Up)
Does Kanye West's "Heartless" emit "cover me!" pheromones? There's Idol winner Kris Allen's acoustic version that, shall we say?, sealed his victory; there's the Lady GaGa live concert cover, along with Ace Hood's "Ruthless" take on the number... The "Heartless" melody and lyrics must strike fellow musicians as somewhat of a non-fit in the dreary, AutoTuned oeuvre that was 808s and Heartbreak, begging for modification. Or else everyone just can't get enough of that effing song.
I'll be the first to say, "Heartless" lends itself to several genres; and The Fray's latest cover -- as an aching, earnest pop-rock ballad -- takes on a solid life of its own. The Fray first covered "Heartless" at Live Lounge, which begat other fantastic covers, such as Leona Lewis' cover of Snow Patrol's "Run" (get out the tissues and download that now), but has since released a proper single and music video.
As you might expect, the music video is an extremely bleak and lonely affair: a lovesick schoolboy doodles in his math notebook, and a forsaken, bleeding heart trudges in a defeated journey to nowhere, which instantly recalls Gnarls Barkley's video for "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" as well as Spoon's "Everything Hits At Once" video.
I didn't quite expect this song to work with kids as subjects, but the solitary, cerebral aspect of doodling is somehow painfully sad here - and the video becomes lovely, if a bit disturbing, when doodles morph into elaborate and nightmarish theme-park monsters...
+ Watch Kanye's version of "Heartless" after the jump! And by the way, Kanye approves. Phew.
+ The feud between Mariah Carey and Eminem has just escalated to new levels. Now the rapper is threatening to release nude photos of the megastar, supposedly from when they were together. (US Magazine)
+ Jessica Simpson has a new reality show coming out on VH1 and she's got some people pretty pissed about her extravagant spending habits. (Pop Crunch)
+ Panic At The Disco have finally announced replacements for the two members who left the group earlier this month. (NME)
