about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

Hallelujah and praise Beysus! The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards just went down, and Beyonce ruled the night, sweeping up three awards -- Best Video for "Single Ladies," Best Female, and Best Song for "Halo." In a rare nod to her real-life love, Beyonce thanked her husband Jay-Z for putting a ring on it, and then Valentine's Day came early when she performed a red, romantic rendition of "Sweet Dreams."

In case you missed this weekend's MTV special airing of the making of Janet Jackson's VMA performance and tribute to Michael Jackson, we've got eight online videos to make up for it.

Watch Janet Jackson and her crew of top dancers and choreographers -- Wade Robson, Tyce Diorio, Tina Landon, Jeri Slaughter, Travis Payne, Brian Friedman, Cris Judd, Dave Scott, Mia Michaels, Laurie Ann Gibson and Wade Robson -- rehearse and get physically and emotionally prepared to pay homage to Michael Jackson at the VMAs.

Plus, see Janet Jackson's dancers share heartfelt memories about working with Michael Jackson -- Wade Robson wears costume pieces Michael Jackson gave him on the "Bad" video set, get a fly-on-the-wall look at the performance details -- the shoes were custom-designed by Christian Louboutin, Janet reminds the dancers to stretch their eyes open during "Thriller," remembering that Michael gave his dancers the same tip -- and experience Janet's raw emotion as she steps onto the Radio City Music Hall stage to practice and finally perform the "Scream" choreography which she hadn't performed since she and Michael shot the video in 1995.

Watch all eight behind-the-scenes videos of Janet Jackson and her now-legendary fleet of choreographers picked to pay tribute to Michael Jackson at the 2009 VMAs.

The MTV VMAs go big before they even start. That means over-the-top outfits, and arrivals so big that the VMAs might as well be called the VBAs for Very Big Arrivals. It's the VMAs. You don't have your dad drop you off in his crappy Buick banger. Case in point: At the 2008 VMAs, Tokio Hotel rolled up to the red carpet in a larger-than-life monster truck tricked out with their faces on it. And T-Pain rode an elephant to the red carpet.

This year's VMA red carpet, located right outside of Radio City Music Hall, will get hit with tons of all-star action and over-the-top arrivals in the form of live animals and extremely noisy modes of transportation. See if you can guess which VMA artists might be arriving at the red carpet via the following vehicles.

Your choices are:

+ Taylor Swift
+ Pink
+ Leighton Meester
+ The All-American Rejects

And...
+ Fire truck
+ Horse and carriage
+ Parade float
+ Jaguar Convertible

Watch the VMA Preshow at 8pm tonight to catch all of the VMAs' Very Big Arrivals! Plus, watch the VMA red carpet live, and get more secrets of the 2009 VMAs!

Room 501 inside Radio City Music Hall is also known as the reindeer room, which gets its name because that's where the reindeer in the yearly Radio City Christmas Spectacular get dressed.

But VMA night, Santa's sleighmates will hand over the keys to one of two of the 2009 VMA's biggest stars who'll perform live and could potentially win up to nine VMAs: Beyonce or Lady Gaga.

By Sunday, the rooms will be primped and polished and stocked with the contents of their riders, and their names will be up on the door, at which point the 5th Floor of Radio City Music Hall goes on lockdown. But before that happens, check out a few behind-the-scenes photos of this VMA dressing room before it gets revamped and ready for its VMA A-list guest.

Earlier today at Radio City Music Hall, while rehearsals for the 2009 MTV VMAs were going on upstairs, I caught up with All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat outside of the "gentlemen's lounge," which is just a fancy way of saying bathroom. I like to interview celebrities outside of bathrooms because I like to keep things classy. And All Time Low always keeps things classy,  so we pretty much went straight into talking about puking.

Watch Jack and Alex predict the future and in this case, how they wanna see 3OH!3 win Best New Artist at the 2009 VMAs. Plus, how they might end their night -- with some drinking and barfing.

We're just days away from the 2009 MTV VMAs at Radio City Music Hall, and the celebrity guests and big-name announcements and appearances are flooding in.

Just announced this morning...

+ Alicia Keys will join Jay-Z onstage for his live performance of "Empire State of Mind" off of Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 album. (Put it on repeat... Now.)

+ Eminem will appear on stage at the VMAs! (Will he get a bare ass to the face again? Probably not, but he was such a good sport at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards...)

+ MTV legend Jennifer Lopez has been added to the list of 2009 VMA presenters!

+ AND, this just in... JUSTIN BIEBER will present a VMA too! (Get it? JUST IN? JUST IN?) Stay tuned for more VMA news, and follow the MTV Buzzworthy Blog on Twitter at @MTVBuzzworthy for more VMA news, backstage reports and celeb spottings!

+ Don't miss the 2009 VMAs live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, September 13 at 9pm!

Boom. And there it is. The 2009 MTV VMA stage. The scene is set, and Radio City Music Hall -- a 75-year-old venue -- just got catapulted into 2009. (If Radio City were an old lady, she'd probably have to cover its eyes when Lady Gaga performs live on Sunday, September 13.) The entire VMA stage pretty much looks like the coolest, loudest, most intense music video ever.

Check out more photos of the 2009 MTV VMA set, stage, and floor of Radio City Music Hall, before it gets packed with celebrities. Yes, those big pieces of paper are the much-discussed seat cards, which will soon hold the famous butts of Robert Pattinson, Jay-Z, Paramore, and the VMA nominees and performers! Stay tuned!

Radio City Music Hall -- the site of the 2009 MTV VMAs -- is a theatrical and historical marvel and a feat of technical genius and mastery. You can't turn one of the narrow corners or wind through the cramped halls backstage without running into a theatrical milestone. The Radio City theater is the largest indoor theater in the world, with a stage that measures 66.5 feet deep and 144 feet wide, designed to resemble a setting sun. The auditorium measures 160 feet from the back to stage, and the ceiling is an absolutely imposing 84 feet. All above, around, and below the Radio City stage is a labyrinth of secret passageways, gears, pulleys, and elevators.  (Apparently, Radio City's elevator system was so advanced that the U.S. Navy used identical hydraulics in their World War II aircraft carriers. Legend has it that during the war, government agents guarded the basement of Radio City to protect the Navy's technological advantage. Hardcore!)

And since Radio City is home to the Rockettes, known for their Christmas Spectacular, it's pretty much Christmas all year. Radio City has been around for 75 years, which means its collected a LOT of theatrical relics in over the past near-century.

And when I toured Radio City during VMA rehearsals and checked out the MTV VMA production offices on the seventh floor, which is where the Rockettes normally practice, which is why the floors are scuffed by years of Rockettes practicing their kick line, I saw an unbelievable amount of Rockette, Radio City, and Christmas Spectacular relics, including mannequins, framed posters older than me, and even some eerie Rockette dolls whose eyes followed me on the way to the bathroom. (And we saw costumers hard at work making reindeer antlers for the Rockettes!!!)

Check out behind-the-scenes photos of the Rockettes' costumes, Radio City rehearsal spaces and more, and aptly, check out the 2009 MTV VMA "VMA Side Story" promo to see theater and pop music come to life in the West Side Story-themed promos, which pay tribute to New York. And stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes VMA sneak peeks on the MTV Buzzworthy Blog.

I just got back from touring the byzantine backstage area and checking out the absolutely jaw-dropping stage at Radio City Music Hall, where the 2009 MTV VMAs will take place in just four short days on Sunday, September 13. (Seriously, the 2009 MTV VMA stage should win a VMA for Best VMA Stage).

I saw Russell Brand rehearsing, nearly tripped over to-the-moon-and-back's worth of cables, dodged burly (but nice!) union dudes loading in set pieces, and espied lots of mindbogglingly old relics from Radio City's 75-year history (that's even older than Liza Minnelli!)

But one of the best things I saw was Taylor Swift's STUFF -- all of her gear and guitars (no teardrops though) just sitting in the lobby.

There was no sign of Taylor Swift herself -- she was probably still busy freaking out over her four CMA nominations. Or getting ready for her big VMA performance. But here's what all of Taylor Swift's gear is doing while it awaits Taylor's rehearsal.

Stay tuned to the MTV Buzzworthy Blog for more behind-the-scenes access to the 2009 MTV VMAs!

Think dream catchers, feathery roach clips, tie-dye parachute pants, and other New Agey apparel isn't VMA red carpet worthy? THINK AGAIN.

Watch as 3OH!3 takes you shopping with them to find something to wear to the VMAs. First stop? An out-of-the-way mom-and-pop shop, where they stock up on stuff to wear to the VMAs in New York City, where they COULD win a VMA for Best New Artist.

+ See the dumbest/ best thing anyone ever wore on the VMA red carpet, and don't miss the 2009 VMAs live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, September 13 at 9pm!
