Kanye West pulled off something impressive, putting out a new album, Graduation, that was hyped enough to sell nearly 1 million copies in one week in the United States. The boy band era gone, that's something that's very hard to do these days, so kudos to the Chicago Kid.

And in no way should this take away from the accomplishment of his retail "rival" 50 Cent, whose Curtis moved nearly 700k in the same week. Released any other week this year and that's more than enough to rate a #1 berth on The Billboard 200. And they both bested a new album from country party boy Kenny Chesney, who has had a string of #1 entries over the last few years. It really didn't matter who won, because this has been a kick ass week for hip-hop music!

But with the battle of the hip-hop titans at the cash register over, we want to know this: Which one put out the better album? HHNLive and Rolling Stone says Kanye, while Pitchfork gives the creative edge to 50.

Tell us what you think in the comments.

Permanently scrawled down his left forearm are the words "Must Not Sleep." Down his right, "Must Warn Others." It certainly gives the impression that Definitive Jux MC/producer Aesop Rock is dead serious. And he lives up to his tats, too, delivering acidic cautionary tales dressed up as big beat rap anthems and basically keeping an eye out for all of us.Here's a sample:

"Sign of the swine in the swarm when a king is a whore who comply and conform. Miles outside of the eye of the storm, with a siphon to lure out a prize and award, while avoiding the vile and bazaar that is violence and war."

See? Smokin! It's that brilliant fierceness that has made Aesop Rock a staple member of Def Jux's roster for years. And although it has a lot to do with why we chose him for artist of the week, we gotta admit, there's way more to this MC than bee-sting acrobatics. For one thing, he's out of his damn mind.

And as much as we expect the faithful out there to simply take our word for it, we did it one better and recorded the full extent of Aesop Rock's ridiculousness when we handed over the reins to MTV for a week. He decided to use the opportunity to create his cable access show, co-hosted by beatmaker Blockhead. Do you love action? Enjoy the knife-throwing segment! More into romance? Light a candle and call in your relationship questions! Are you a nature kid? Well, this show's got a real live monkey.

Watch as the foremost in frowny, political hip-hop gives his deadpan analysis of celebrity news items, Irish dancing, perfect dates and the deliciousness of grapes. And hey, if you hate fun, there's also a super exclusive interview with Aesop Rock, immediately following the show. So hey, you see that 'Play' button down there? Why don't you go ahead and push it. Mmmmm. Push it real good.

And check out his MTV.com artist page for more videos, including an exclusive live performance and a free download of his track "39 Thieves."

Having been shut out for the five awards for which he was nominated, Kanye West is pissed, reports AP.

West, waiting for an elevator in a crowded hallway [at The Palms in Las Vegas], began yelling about losing all five categories for which he was nominated. 'That's two years in a row, man ... give a black man a chance," West said, stomping around his entourage and directing his comments at a reporter. "I'm trying hard man, I have the ... number one record, man." West said he never will return to MTV.

That leaves us wondering: Will Kanye blow off his scheduled TRL appearance with 50 Cent on Tuesday, the day they'll both release new albums? Tune in to find out.

And, hell, even if he swears us off, we're sticking with him, dammit. Check out his entire five-song performance in the Fantasy Suite at The Palms in Las Vegas, which can be seen exclusively online!

crs-premiere-2.jpg

So, what happens on MTV shows is generally the fodder for the Remote Control blog, and hip-hop is the focus of the Sucker Free blog, but we can't NOT talk about last night's premiere of Celebrity Rap Superstar!

Who knew that the breakout rap talent would be Skid Row's Sebastian Bach? He handled LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" like a champ, and somehow his cheesy hair metal chops actually helped him out! He could win this thing! Although, so could Countess Vaughan or Shar Jackson, so watch your back, Sebastian ... Read More...

Heidi started showing off her big purple rock last night on The Hills. It's a very nice ring and all, but it is purple and unless you are Prince that is just not on. Sorry, Spencer, but when you are trying to trick someone into marrying you propose to someone you have to come with a diamond, period.

The problem is that an amethyst "is said to protect its wearer against seduction," according to the International Colored Gemstone Association. Nice moves, Spence. If it were us who was buying a non-diamond engagement ring (and who buys a non-diamond engagement ring, especially when you're as rich as these people?), we'd have gone for something that evokes passion, something as lush and fiery as a ruby.

In honor of that, we give you the Kaiser Chiefs's "Ruby," which was among the songs heard in last night's episode of The Hills. Check out the video for that and see what else was in the show after the jump.

jay-z-74388098.jpgLily Allen left a London nightclub in a bag, the Daily Mail reports. Not "half in the bag," as in drunk, but literally in a large plastic bag carried by friends. They apparently lugged her down Oxford Street and into a car. Visa problems may be the least of her worries.

UPDATE: MTV News is reporting that Lily has canceled her tour dates and her previously announced VMA appearance.

In hip-hop, Jay-Z is the cash king, according to Forbes. His estimated $34 million in 2006 earnings from various ventures put him ahead of 50 Cent ($32 million), Diddy ($28 million), Timbaland ($21 million) and Dr. Dre ($20 million), who with Jigga make up the top 5. Look for him to flex those money making muscles at the MTV VMAs on September 9, as he's up for the Quadruple Threat of the Year award. (Jay-Z photo by Photo by Vince Bucci/Getty Images)

Plus Uncle Kracker, Ryan Seacrest and OJ Simpson (?!) after the jump. Read More...

newport_harbor2.jpg

Newport Harbor premiered last night and, Holy Joe Simpson, is new blonde on the block Chrissy's dad strict or what?! The guy has got his daughter on one of those super-short leashes like people use to walk pit-bulls. Well, he doesn't physically have her on a leash (that would be just a little too Michael Vick) but she's going to be hard-pressed to get away with anything beyond holding hands with Clay if Pop's got anything to say about it. Say goodnight to trying to get busy, kids! Read More...

femmes-cover.jpgMos Def apparently got into it with some paparazzi in Hollywood last night, and TMZ has video of it.

Perez Hilton has posted some of Britney Spears' half-naked shots from the September issue of Allure, and, of course, logged his thoughts about them.

One of the Violent Femmes is suing another of the Violent Femmes over royalties and the fact that the latter allowed "Blister in the Sun" to be used in a Wendy's ad.

Interestingly and apropos of nothing, MTV News has uncovered the now 27 year-old-girl who appeared on the cover of Violent Femmes, the album that featured the song. "It's just a cool aspect of who I am," Billie Jo Campbell says, "and I think it makes me more dynamic." MTV News also tracked down the Nirvana baby and other children featured on iconic album covers.

Even though her dad said a while back that it's happening, Christina Aguilera won't come out and say that she's preggers. She recently told InStyle mag that she wants her kids to learn Spanish, but when asked to confirm her maternity, she said only, "It's definitely something we can't wait to begin."

But, someone with a body like hers can't hide what's happening. There are a few new pix of the once "Dirrty" girl who most recently took a classier turn with her career, and she seems, well, larger ... in a good way! Check 'em out at OMG! and at Perez Hilton.

One can only guess how this will affect her look if she decides to attend the MTV VMAs on Sept. 9 in Las Vegas. She's long been known for varied looks that show lots of skin when walking our red carpets (check out this gallery of snaps for proof). But, even if she's showing, she's gotta show, right? After all she's hoping to share a Best Director Moonman with Matthew Rolston for their collaboration on her video for "Candyman."
