Rap and reggae may have a common ancestor -- Jamaican toasting –- but that wasn't the inspiration for Nas and Damian Marley’s partnership on their new album, Distant Relatives.

“He’s a G,” says Nas about Damian, when asked about what brought the two together. Damian returns the love, noting one of his earliest tracks was recorded over a Nas beat and that the two often cover similar issues in their rhymes.

Distant Relatives focuses on Africa's potential and how even the poorest ’hoods in America have much more than many townships in the Land of Kings. You can hear Nas and Damian talk more about their collaboration and plans for improving life in Africa -- from supporting education to pumping up the economy. For example, Nas, the kid from Queensbridge, wants to tap the African oil business. Really. He wants to be an oil man. Check it out for yourself ...

The Daily Mail called Kelis’ skintight pink latex suit "bizarre." Global Grind declared her snoods and bustiers a precursor to Lady Gaga. Her "Cruella De Vil" fur hat? PETA deemed it a crime against animals.

Kelis' thirst to innovate spawned a discography of tracks that splice, mash and blend R&B, rap, house and rock. That same go-for-broke attitude has gotten her Alexander McQueen-inspired outfits lauded by fashion heads and clowned by bloggers (and sometimes the reverse). Her getups, which she says she doesn't plan out much in advance, mix the unexpected like a Givenchy gold-studded leather jacket with Mickey Mouse Adidas and a "Rad Hatter" black bowler with an ’80s throwback gold chain.

Before Kelis rocked the charts with "Milkshake," "Caught Out There" and most recently, "Acapella," she worked retail. If you think she has strong opinions about music, wait till you hear what she says about fashion. She has plenty to say about her choices (she doesn’t love all of them); haters (including PETA); and how a woman should decide what to wear (just listen).

Watch Kelis explain the inspiration for five of her outfits and her approach to fashion:

You'll find more about what makes great a great outfit and what every every woman should know about fashion, according to Kelis, after the jump.

Chances are if you're a music fan, you know that former Fugees Wyclef Jean and Pras are both of Haitian descent. After the earthquake Wyclef has been leading the relief efforts, raising money for his charity Yele and trying to gain support for relocating 2 million Port au Prince residents. But what other celebrities have Haitian heritage? Plenty. Take a look at the following list.

If you think we just came up with this list to help raise money for earthquake relief efforts, you're definitely on to us. You can send $10 right now to help the American Red Cross effort in Haiti by texting "Haiti" to 90999 (a charge will be added to your phone bill). For those who want to give more, please donate to Hope for Haiti Now. And don't forget to watch tonight's telethon: Hope for Haiti Now.

10. Maxwell -- While the neo-soul crooner was raised in Brooklyn, his mother was from Haiti. He recently attended an emergency meeting organized by former President Bill Clinton to develop ways of helping the impoverished people of Haiti.

9. Arcade Fire's Regine Chassagne -- The singer for indie-rock group Arcade Fire recently wrote a piece for The Observer about her ancestral ties to the island and how she is desperately trying to find out about friends and family. "Everybody I talk to says the same thing: time has stopped. Simultaneously, time is at work. Sneakily passing through the cracks, taking the lives of survivors away, one by one."

8. Jason Derulo -- The man who went platinum with the hit "Whatcha Say" was born in Miami to parents who are Haitian immigrants. He recently told MTV News: "I'm really proud how the celebrities have kind of come together, especially Wyclef. I mean, he's always been very, very instrumental in charities for Haiti, but he has really, really stepped up."

The science fair setting of Motion City Soundtrack's new video, "Her Words Destroyed My Planet," means we must deconstruct its imagery using everything we learned about critical thinking while studying for the SATs. For starters, the title "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" tells us all we need to know -- or does it? What was the protagonist's planet like? Before the breakup described in the lyrics, this world had an Xbox and weed. Any NASA scientist would agree this world sounds quite habitable. Then a romantic catastrophe occurred and the broken-hearted occupant of this planet was sent careening out of orbit. As a result, he shaved off his beard and got a job at Uncommon Grounds.  A true tragedy.

Now let's delve into the video setting. Motion City Soundtrack singer Justin Pierre and guitarist Joshua Cain and video director Isaac Rentz chose not to set this "Planet" in a strip mall java hut or Xbox-less rumpus room. No, they went deep into the belly of the school gym science fair where baking soda volcanoes crumble like hearts, creating a gritty analogy for their brittle tune. Ergo, "Planet" is to "Science Fair" as "Breakups" are to ... well, you'll just have to watch the video to get the answer to that.
