Exclusive Interview: Carolina Liar

dsc_0018.jpg

Last month, we posted Carolina Liar’s debut video, “I’m Not Over,” and some behind-the-scenes footage of the band. That, coupled with the exposure the band received all season long on The Hills, prompted Buzzworthy readers, Hills heads, and new fans of the up-and-coming band to email us, asking where they can find out more about rootsy singer-songwriter Chad Wolf and his band, Carolina Liar.

So, we invited Chad Wolf over to Fort Buzzworthy, where the sweeter-than-Tupelo-honey Southern rocker gave us the abridged version of his musical journey and ascent up the L.A. totem pole to The Hills — from playing coffee shops to a chance encounter with producer Max Martin (the genius “fixer” behind smash hits by Britney Spears, Robyn and Kelly Clarkson), to scoring a spot on the soundtrack to all that delectable, circuitous Spencer-Heidi-Lauren-Audrina drama.

Check out his exclusive Buzzworthy video interview, see more photos of Chad and Carolina Liar here, and get more Hills dirt on the Remote Control blog.

Tokio Hotel Tour Diary: Part 5

Sounds like the brothers Kaulitz, plus Georg and Gustav, have been burning through some Rosetta Stone discs, because the ESL post-goth rockers are sounding English-er than ever in their fifth Buzzworthy tour diary video, which finds Tokio Hotel prepping for the stateside release of Scream and their first-ever performance on U.S. television. Conveniently enough, that’s happening downstairs on TRL this Tuesday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m. EST, so set your Tivo to catch their live performance.

Exclusive: Being On The Road With Flyleaf Is Like ‘Summer Camp’

Since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2005, Flyleaf’s been busting their butts out on the road. And all their hard work is really paying off … last week “All Around Me” cracked the top 40 of Billboard’s Pop 100 chart (yeah, pop). Now, with the help of MTV and Rock Band, Flyleaf is crisscrossing the country on a co-headlining tour with Seether. And all the best parts are going to be shown on MTV2, where you can catch tour diaries and exclusive videos.

We caught up with Lacey Mosley, Pat Seals and Sameer Bhattacharya when they made a pit stop here at 1515 to talk about being on tour, when they’re releasing a new album and what it’s like playing their song “I’m So Sick” on Rock Band. See what they had to say…

Find out who Benny Hinn is and watch more of our Flyleaf interview here. Then go here to get tour dates and learn how you could win a chance to play Rock Band with Flyleaf. (How cool would that be?! Watch out, though, ’cause we hear that guitarist Jared Hartmann is a totally competitive video game junkie.)

Artist Of The Week: Mariah Carey

img_2868.JPG

(All photos, credit: Danika Singfield)

Even back in the early ‘90s, when she was just a curly-haired Long Island girl in cut-offs and a hoodie, Mariah Carey — the youngest daughter of a struggling, middle-class broken home — was that chick, destined for a luxe life of Louis Vuitton luggage and Louboutin heels. That larger-than-life voice soared out of our Sony Sports Walkman (remember the banana-yellow ones?) like a supernatural force, and nearly two decades, five Grammys, 11 studio albums, and 18 #1 singles later, that chick’s still rocking iPods and MTV.

With that logic-defying range that glides from whisper-soft-sexy-sweet to match-in-a-gas-tank explosive, Mariah went Unplugged, got animated for Christmas, and took down a cheating Jerry O’Connell at a matinee. She went undercover on a Jet Ski, fled her symbolic wedding, cruised Paris with Pharrell, and lived out a computer geek’s fantasy with a unicorn at her side. She debuted more #1 singles than any other artist in chart history, and she spent more time on the charts and broke and sold more records than half her peers combined.

New Video: Carolina Liar, ‘I’m Not Over’

carolina.jpg

With Spencer now out of the apartment and She-Spencer partying with Lauren, the latest Hills drama involves Heidi encroaching upon the sacred ground that is Audrina and Lauren’s apartment — dudes, Audrina needs to learn that home turf is sacred and you don’t let the enemy in on sacred ground. (Even if they do just need to pick up their cheesy photo box and gilded mirror.)

Lauren might argue that where Heidi goes, deceit isn’t far behind (’specially if Spencer’s right behind Heidi). So, it almost makes too much sense that the song playing during that scene where Audrina and Lauren discuss Heidi’s visit (so tense! so awkward!) was written by a band with a shady-sounding name — Carolina Liar. (Hills music supervisors, you done did it again, you dirty dogs, you!)

Carolina Liar is South Carolina-born roots rocker Chad Wolf (pictured above), who played L.A. coffeehouses (not unlike the ones where Lauren’s constantly picking up those iced coffees) for years before a chance encounter with Swedish power-producer Max Martin, who booked him on a flight to Sweden, which led to Wolf’s forming a band backed by impeccably dressed Swedes, which found them all back in an L.A. house, where Wolf and co. wrote and recorded an album’s worth of introspective yet accessible modern rock songs (think a grittier Maroon 5) several of which have landed on The Hills.

Exclusive Video: Cobra Starship On the Set of Their ‘Guilty Pleasure’ Video

The thing about Cobra Starship is that they’re really camera-shy and highly secretive and not really very easy to work with. And also, they’re the complete opposite. Which, in addition to being the human embodiments of an awesome party, is why they sent us an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming video, “Guilty Pleasure.” Cobra fans, you probably already know this, but for the lamely unfamiliar: this is the second video for the song — the first one was lovably low-rent — and this version, which should be released next month, is what happens when your record label basically hands you a blank check to parlay into a ridiculously pricey video.

Check out the clip, which also features a closely shorn Patrick Stump, who produced their latest album, ¡Viva La Cobra! (slightly off-topic: upside ! is hard to type), and who stars as their shady manager in the video.

+ Plus: check out more exclusive Cobra videos, and catch them in the flesh on today’s promtastic episode of TRL.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince to Reunite (Finally) This Summer??

dj_jazzy_jeff.jpg

’80s reunions are pretty much the new neon — first there’s the announcement of the re-emancipation of NKOTB. And now — drop those bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousers and double-knit reversible slacks, because it’s looking more likely that a long-awaited revival of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince may (finally) be a reality.

A DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince reunion has been rumored for years — decades, even. But with MC-turned-megastar the Fresh Prince’s movie, Hancock, nearing its July 2008 release date, might DJ Jazzy Jeff be dusting off his 1s and 2s to join Will for a “summertime” revival?

No tour dates have been announced, but we’ll have our Adidas and Jams at the ready, just in case.

Watch the pioneering, classic, and endearingly low-budge video, “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” (And peep the sweet Porsche “car phone!”) The single won them the first-ever Best Rap Performance Grammy in 1989, but Will Smith and Jeff didn’t attend the Grammys that year. See why in a vintage Yo! MTV Raps clip.
