about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

I had a conversation recently with one of the bands who played MTV Spring Break 2009 -- probably better not to tell you which one -- and among the glory stories, was one of waking up on the beach between two beautiful women, both of whom were rubbing his head affectionately. If that's what the morning is like at Spring Break, can you imagine the night?!? Well, you won't have to imagine anything much longer. Tonight FNMTV returns to take you directly to the thick of this year's Spring Break at its baddest!

I can't promise that you'll get your head rubbed. That's up to you. But I can absolutely guarantee that you'll be throwin' elbows and your head back as the crowd gets down to live performances by...

Lil Wayne

Asher Roth

Jim Jones

Kid Cudi

N.E.R.D featuring Santigold

Flo Rida

All-American Rejects

3OH!3

You'd have a hard time coming up with a lineup that good on the bestseller rack at a record store. But then, I guess you'd also have a hard time finding a record store! OH SNAP! But who needs one when all the hottest action on earth is cookin' out in that Panama City Beach sunshine, just waiting for you to join in?

Keep an eye on Buzzworthy next week for more tastes of what's to come, including exclusive reports from Lil Wayne, Young Money, Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Jim Jones, and 3OH!3. Then tune in tonight at 8pm ET to see what it's all been building up to! And just because I know you're a glutton for instant gratification, here's Jim Jones doing "Na Na Nana Na Na," live from Panama City Beach!

If your New Year's resolution was the same as ours -- increase your daily dose of Miley Cyrus -- then we've got just the thing: a smokin' hawt (live!) NYE performance of "Fly on the Wall!"

Ignore the inherent weirdness of seeing Miley lament the pitfalls of fame on MTV's super gigundo NYE spectacular, and appreciate it for what it is: a self-referential pop song from the girl who's made more off Hannah Montana lunchboxes than most third world countries make in a decade.

Bonus: Grab your pink ribbons and get ready for the live versions of "See You Again" and "Seven Things," after the jump. (Or do like us and watch all three in a row!)

2008 was quite the year for Miley Cyrus. Between her M&M Cru vs ACDC dance-off, her Vanity Fair cover, her Hannah Montana movie, her romances, her hit records, and turning 16, we're guessing her mood ring mostly hovered somewhere between pretty awesome, and totally off-the-charts rad.

Though My Cy seems like she's been lucky in love lately with her new model-actor Justin Gaston, there's been wide speculation that "7 Things" is an ode to her former love, Nick Jonas. WHOEVER it's about, "7 Things" does an excellent job of highlighting seven reasons we loved Miley in 2008!

7. Miley's Not Afraid Of A Close-Up: Everyone's always bellyaching about how their pores look like craters in HD, but Miley is tweeny and gorge and always camera-ready. (Color us jealous... and also not famous).

6. Teddy Bears Are People Too: Laugh if you will, but we dare you to hug a teddy bear the next time you're feeling Erykah Sadu ... that shniz works, haters!

5. Numerology: Miley probably didn't choose seven randomly. In numerology, seven represents thought/consciousness, in Prince's world, it's all about deadly sins and stuff, and in the movies, it represents finding a head in a box! What could be more thoughtful than enumerating for your lame-0, l00zer BF all the reasons he sucks so hard? We can think of nothing.

4. "The Rules": Even though she's only 16, she understands how a girl should be treated -- like a pretty, pretty princess on a pretty pony! Texted apologies = major no-no. "I eM So Sry baby, kthxbai" DEEEEEELETE!

3. Break-up Party! It kinda looks like Miley's throwin' herself a major break-up rager. I mean, there are some accusations flying, true, but there's also lots of fun dancing around and stuff, and all those girls look like they're maybe gonna get together for a sleepover and try out some new sparkly nail polishes and stuff. FUN!

2. Memory Collage: Did you catch that memory collage on the bulletin board?? It was the sweetest thing ever, though you're vain, so you PROBABLY DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE! (Jerk!)

1. Miley's Still A Lover, Not A Fighter: Sure, so, Miley *was* chugging down some haterade at the beginning of the song, when she was going on and on about the seven things she hates about you, but she flips the script! She turned her frown upside down and finished off with seven things she LOVES about you. Sweet, right?

There are, of course, many more reasons to lurve Miley, the biggest and best being that she's going to be closing out 2008 by SURPRISING one insanely lucky fan TOMORROW night. Watch it go down live at 8pm ET on FNMTV Presents: A Miley-Sized Surprise...New Year's Eve 2009. And check out more Miley moments in MTV's Best of 2008!

secondhand serenade
Our good buddy John Vesely, aka Secondhand Serenade, doesn't quite strike us as the high school theater type. Don't you get more of a "used-Jetta, Salinger-reading, earnest boyfriend" vibe? Well, regardless, his new video, "Your Call," is beyond theatrical. It starts off with a velvet curtain opening on an empty, spotlit stage. From there, Vesely's mini-melodrama just builds and builds and builds -- a set materializes, angelic women sway -- until it explodes into an eyes-closed chorus of "I WAS BORRRN! TO TELL YOU I LOVE YOUUU!" Beats the heck out of any boring play we ever saw.

"Your Call," the second single off Secondhand Serenade's February release, A Twist In My Story, had a deservedly epic debut on the FNMTV holiday special this past Friday. Needless to say, girls cried. Speaking of which, since you're here and teary-eyed already, you may as well also check out the video for Twist's first single, "Fall For You." Sorry in advance about your sore heartstrings.

You may not have picked up on the Lost Boys theme of Metro Station's brand-new video, "Seventeen Forever," which premiered this past Friday night on FNMTV, but you most certainly zeroed in on those cameos by Billy Ray -- he played a carnie of sorts -- and Miley Cyrus, who played a bad driver and also premiered her own "Fly On the Wall" video that night.

But back to Metro Station. They shot "Seventeen Forever" at the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch in Canyon Saugus, Cali (dude, they filmed Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers there!) under director Josh Forbes, who returned for another Metro Station video -- he also directed "Shake It" and "Control" as well as Boys Like Girls' "Thunder" video, and Sara Bareilles' mechanically inclined "Love Song" video.

Check out Mason's Morrissey hair and a carnival-themed dedication to eternal youth that's far less cloying than that last scene in Grease.

Don't you guys just haaaaate it when you're out on a date with this super-cute guy (who has the same taste in movies as you do! Score!) and you're walking around, talking, laughing and looking up at the full moon, when, all of a sudden, BAM! Your dangerously datable plus-one morphs from scruffy hipster dude to evil, bloodsucking creep! Vampire? Werewolf? You wish -- this guy's the scariest lowlife of all: a camera-wielding paparazzi.

Welcome to Miley Cyrus' worst nightmare.

Her new video, "Fly On The Wall," a (real-life?) horror story about getting chased by a pack of well-choreographed paps -- is equal parts Britney Spears' "Circus," and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with a little of Lindsay Lohan's "Rumors" thrown in for good measure.

The video, which premiered on Friday night's FNMTV, captures the freakiness of My Cy's life, the campy/nonsensical nature of horror flicks (best line: "They were dancing and I'm not really sure why, but they were!") and the amazingness of cheesy group dance numbers all while making us SERIOUSLY nostalgic for Paramore's all-time fave movie, Teen Wolf.

So check it out, catch up on all the latest FNMTV premieres, and let us know whether you think Miley's being slightly overdramatic (paps don't dance!) or just telling it like it is.

Let's get right down to it: The FNMTV holiday extravaganza is the music world equivalent of a two-hour special where the cast of Gossip Girl flies to Australia with the cast of Twilight only to crash halfway on Lost. It's like if George Clooney came back to ER and he was engaged to Brad Pitt AND Angelina. And they adopted more kids. Last but not least, it's like Michael Jackson's Off The Wall, in the sense that it's off the wall.

Host/ new dad Pete Wentz does double-duty tonight, introducing blockbuster video premieres AND performing with Fall Out Boy. THAT FALL OUT BOY. And when he's not talking, Travis McCoy will be filling the gaps with a little ee-err ee-err as the house DJ!

Finally, if you don't mind having your head explode, try thinking about the fact that we also have brand-new videos from Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. AND even her brother Trace AND Metro Station! Pop.

Tonight's FNMTV Video Premieres:
Britney (kind of a big deal) Spears - "Circus"
Miley (maybe you've heard of her?) Cyrus - "Fly On The Wall"
The Game featuring Ne-Yo - "Camera Phone"
Metro Station - "Seventeen Forever"
Secondhand Serenade - "Your Call"

DO NOT NOT WATCH FNMTV. THIS IS THE EPISODE OF THE CENTURY (until the next one...).

Tonight. 8pm ET. MTV. Go.

Oh, Cobra, you little teases! First you make us wait until 2009 for your next album. Then you come at us with more hoodies, hotties, and flouro than a night out with Mark Hunter (he's the Cobrasnake dude, friends).

Get your fangs up and stuff your stocking with Cobra Starship's new "Kiss My Sass" video --  Victoria Asher and Matt Ornstein shot it this summer during Warped Tour, and it features Travis McCoy, who'll be on tonight's season premiere of FNMTV, btw.

And Gabe, good luck on your vocal cord surgery. (Feel free to give Bill Kaulitz a call for emotional support, 'kay?)

Huge announcement: Big brother Pete Wentz and FNMTV are coming home for the holidays and mom is FREAKING out. As you can probably guess, the video premiere extravaganza happening December 5 is getting kicked into major overdrive to make it worthy of the most wonderful time of the year. Not only is Fall Out Boy gonna perform (*jaws drop*), but Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes has signed on to spin records between super exclusive premieres of Miley Cyrus’s “Fly On The Wall,” Metro Station’s “Seventeen Forever,” The Game’s “Camera Phone” and our old buddy Secondhand Serenade’s “Your Call.”

As you probably remember, California-native Secondhand Serenade (aka John Vesely aka Blake Lewis doppelganger) did a stint as a guest blogger a few months back, where he talked us through the creation of his latest album, A Twist In My Story. Well we got along so well – exchanged phone numbers and everything – that John sent us a sneak peek of his ‘FNMTV’-bound video, “Your Call,” and it is INSANE in the best way. Vesely’s sings his face off on a fantasy hillside dotted with tattoo-faced angels, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg! He was born to tell you he loves you. It's probably a good idea to let him.

Watch the sneak peak below, brace yourself for a seismic FNMTV event and, if you have any sense, bookmark this entry. Any minute now you’re gonna find yourself in a turkey coma with a hunk of November still ahead of you. Secondhand Serenade is just the thing to push you through until FNMTV returns with a vengeance, this December 5!

You've probably watched it so many times now that your brain's starting to feed on itself, but just in case you haven't reached that point yet, see Tokio Hotel's big VMA night from start to finish -- from their big red carpet arrival to their big win -- through "ihre augen." (My German sucks if you couldn't tell. What's German for "suck," by the way?) Plus, it looks even better on the MTV player, nein?

Plus:
+ Watch Tokio Hotel on FNMTV
+ TH meet the Pussycat Dolls
+ Bill on the VMA red carpet
+ See the guys prep for their monster truck entrance to the VMAs!
