Listen to The New Regime's "Daydream."

Get lost in Ilan Rubin/The New Regime's dark "Daydream."

You may not know who Ilan Rubin is yet, but a lot of your favorite bands certainly do. The California multi-instrumentalist has spent time behind the drum kit for the likes of Angels & Airwaves and Lostprophets, and is currently the touring drummer for Paramore and Nine Inch Nails. That is a lot of songs to keep track of, so kudos to Rubin for having any space left to write some pretty cool tunes of his own, like this track, "Daydream," from his solo project, The New Regime.

Cillie Barnes hosts the summer's first garden party in her new "Brainwash" lyric video.

With the weather warming up, it's hard not to fantasize about backyard BBQs, cold beverages, and impromptu outdoor shows lit only by twilight, vintage chandeliers, and leftover Christmas lights. And just in case you couldn't wait any longer to commandeer someone's backyard with beer-filled mason jars and kale chips, now you can bridge the gap from May to June with Cillie Barnes' "Brainwash" lyric video: a haunting, lush indie folk ballad and the Los Angeles singer's first single since her time as Vanessa Long with Family Of The Year. (Oh yeah, she changed her name!) But unlike Family Of The Year's sparkly pop indie ensemble approach, Cillie channels the mysterious manic pixie alt-folk vibe of Thao With The Get Down Stay Down -- so it makes perfect sense that "Brainwash"'s lyric video would produce a romantic, flea market-y, "summer in Brooklyn" feeling. Check it out below.

Listen to The Maine's "Happy."

The Maine's new song sounds far from "Happy."

With its shaggy "ooh-woo-ooh" opening, The Maine's "Happy" immediately brings up visions of Pavement and Weezer. The Arizona band's latest single bleeds 1994 vibes, from its downer lyrics to the mid-tempo BPM to the downstroked chorus chords. The new track's not a major sonic departure from the rock anthems of the band's 2011 set, Pioneer, but they do sound especially bummed for a song called "Happy": "This ain't a fairy tale, and I don't think I'll ever be happy," John O'Callaghan sings. Later, he adds, "No, I am not smiling" -- just so we're 100 percent clear about that song title. A '90s pro tip: Irony was kind of a big deal.

Jay-Z spits a rather chaotic verse about wealth in a preview of his "100$ Bill" From "The Great Gatsby" Soundtrack

You can now stream the ENTIRE "Great Gatsby" soundtrack on NPR. So hop to it!

Let's just say that waiting for the "Great Gatsby" soundtrack to drop has awakened a LOT of emotions within us. First, anything involving Leonardo DiCaprio is, like, a "THING" (We totally blame the "Titanic" "Put your hands on me, Jack" car scene). But also, THE TEASERS! Do you KNOW many teasers we've had to endure while waiting for the entire Jay-Z produced soundtrack to drop on May 7? An effing LOT. Well, lucky for us, NPR is streaming the ENTIRE Gatsby soundtrack right now! And you know what that means: Goodbye forever, teasers. Hello, dancing around the office in drop-waist dresses and feather headbands!

Hear Nicki Minaj's remix of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Tonight I'm Getting Over You."

+ Listen to Nicki Minaj's remix of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Tonight I'm Getting Over You." In Nicki's verse, she isn't boo-hooing over a breakup. Instead, she raps "Tonight I'm getting ov-er/ Meditate and do my yog-er," and then heads to the club, natch. (MTV News)

+ Speaking of Ms. Minaj, she and Lil Wayne are teaming up to perform at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, which airs May 19 on ABC. The event will also feature performances by Jennifer LopezChris Brown, Icona Pop, and Ed Sheeran. (MTV News)

+ Watch Deftones' mashup of their own "Engine No. 9" with Kris Kross' "Jump" in a tribute to Chris Kelly, who passed away on Wednesday. Drummer Abe Cunningham also wore his shirt backward and inside out to pay respect. (Rolling Stone)

+ It just took one tweet from Kanye West yesterday to get us super excited about new Yeezy music (we hope -- either that or he was tweeting Kim Kardashian's due date). "June Eighteen," he tweeted. Granted, that's not much info, but it could mean a new album or song (or baby) will drop that day. (RapFix)

+ Psy strikes us as a pretty humorous guy, so it seems fitting that the first book he stars in would be of the comic variety. The "Gentleman" singer's biographical comic book will be titled "Fame: Psy." (Billboard)

+ Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman died yesterday of liver failure. He was 49. (MTV News)

Listen to "Just Desserts," a new collab from Marina and the Diamonds and Charli XCX.

Marina Diamandis and Charli XCX team up on "Just Desserts," a song that's not as sweet as it sounds.

I know we're what you might call "music journalists" and "professionals" around here, but sometimes it's really hard to write about a song when your brain gets all jammed up and you can't make words no good -- a tongue-tied feeling that's similar to when you have a crush on someone and can't figure out how to express yourself without sounding like a fool. And now we're feeling especially inarticulate over "Just Desserts," a superpowered team-up from British pop singers Marina and the Diamonds and Charli XCX, two ladies we've been in "like-like" with for a WHILE.

Watch Ginny Blackmore's "Bones" video.

Ginny Blackmore laments a less-than-perfect relationship in her "Bones" video.

Word on the street is Auckland, New Zealand songstress (and accomplished songwriter) Ginny Blackmore wrote "Bones" in one night during a "girly, emotional moment" which may or may not have involved a bottle of wine. (How all great anti-love songs begin, obviously.) So of course this means that not only is Ginny our actual spirit animal, but even if she didn't sound like the perfect hybrid of Kelly ClarksonSkylar Grey and Kate Bush, and EVEN if her "Bones" video wasn't a gorgeously shot emotional roller coaster, we would be still be OBSESSED with her.

Robin Thicke gives us a future-club vibe on the will.i.am produced "Give It To You."

Robin Thicke explores a futuristic club vibe on the will.i.am-produced "Give It To You."

Robin Thicke doesn't strike us as a club-hopping, neon lights, up-all-night kind of dude. Nope, he seems more like an "ultrasmooth lounge/refined bourbon" type -- just listen to "Blurred Lines" if you don't believe us. But our snap judgments could never stop a talented singer like Robin from KILLING IT in all genres, which is all too clear on his new will.i.am-produced jam "Give It To You" (featuring 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar), from his forthcoming Blurred Lines album. But enough talking; let's dance!

Watch Austin Mahone be swarmed by fans in Mexico City!

Girls are literally CLIMBING TREES to catch a glimpse of Austin Mahone in Mexico!

Don't get us wrong -- we knew that Austin Mahone had a lot of fans (AHEM, MAHOMIES). We even knew that he had extra-famous fans like Selena Gomez! (Honestly, who ISN'T gonna Stan hard for Austin's IMMENSE guns?) But did you know that MTV's Artist To Watch has (approximately) the most fans in Mexico City? No, really. Like, ALL THE FANS. And they'll stop at nothing to swarm the "Heart In My Hand (Live On The Beach)" singer should they catch an in-person glimpse of him. That said, it's time to watch a video of Austin's Mexican Mahomies going HAM for him outside Universal Republic's Mexico City offices! But maybe don't watch if you're scared of huge crowds, unfettered squee-ing, and fangirls in trees. Yes, you heard us. We said, "FANGIRLS IN TREES."

Watch Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu's funky new "Q.U.E.E.N." video.

Janelle Monáe twerks it out in something fierce in her brand-new "Q.U.E.E.N." video.

HOO boy. We THOUGHT we knew what it was like to miss soul-funk pioneer Janelle Monáe in the time between 2010's The ArchAndroid and her upcoming sophomore effort, The Electric Lady. We also felt another twinge of "we need more Janelle solo stuff!" after her appearance on fun.'s "We Are Young." But now, after watching Janelle's hyper-stylish, black-and-white video for her powerful Erykah Badu-assisted jam "Q.U.E.E.N.," we are ENTIRELY aware of just how empty life was without Janelle and her unbeatable tuxedo-ed swagger.
