about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

+ Better luck next time, Royston Langdon. Because the crazy rumor of the day is that formerly scary-haired singer/guitarist Lenny Kravitz will be stepping in for Scott Weiland as Velvet Revolver's new frontman. (Idolator)

+ The Jonas Brothers describe their TRL takeover as "an amazing time in our lives." Our thoughts exactly. (MTV)

+ These days, it's "mo' money, mo' problems" for High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens. (E! Online)

+ And today in unlikely collaborations, Usher and Keith Urban will be teaming up to give a free NFL kickoff concert. (Billboard)

+ British supermodel Agnyness Deyn is reportedly engaged to Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. Which totally explains the collective high-pitched scream of "NOOOOOOOO!" we heard all the way across the Atlantic. (Fashion Gossip Weekly)

+ Can't wait for Madden '09? Check out Franz Ferdinand's website, where they're streaming the game's featured track, "Lucid Dreams." (Franz Ferdinand)

+ Lil Wayne to his fans at the Virgin Mobile festival: "[If] y'all got Tha Carter III...I f---in' appreciate you." (MTV)

You saw our "Best Female Video" nominee rundown. Now check out some of our favorite of the many videos vying for a "Best Male Video" VMA nom. Then hurry up and vote for the video you think should be nominated! You've only got until 11am ET tomorrow to vote, so get crackalackin'! And watch FNMTV this Friday to see who the final nominees are.

+ Snoop Dogg, "Sensual Seduction" -- '80s cable access, ladies dressed like Apollonia, and Snoop in his pimpinest gear yet! We're still working on a way to work "I'm not gonna rush the stroke" into our daily vernacular.

+ Chris Brown, "Forever" -- It's like he's just showing off at this point, but we're still watching what he can do with his feet.

+ Jesse McCartney, "Leavin'" -- Lil J's all growed up and sounds so sexy singing about G5 that we don't even care about the massive carbon footprint that thing's "leavin'" behind.

+ T-Pain, "Bartender" -- The reason T kept getting all those buy-backs.

+ Albert Hammond Jr., "GFC" -- You're hot, I'm dizzy.

+ Kanye West, "The Good Life," -- Sigh. Kanye back before he was Angry Kanye.

+ Lupe Fiasco, "Superstar" -- That Matthew Santos hook still haunts.

+ Common, "Drivin' Me Wild" -- The sleeper hit of the pack. And Common in a white tux = extra eye-candy appeal.

+ Mika, "Love Today" -- Freddie Mercury lives!

+ Guru, "State of Clarity" -- Hip-hop and cartoon cats! This totally makes up for MC Skat Cat.

+ DJ Khaled, "I'm So Hood (Remix)" -- DJ Khaled yells at us... and we sorta like it.

+ O'Neal McKnight, "Check Your Coat" -- To the DeLorean!

+ Mark Ronson featuring Lily Allen, "Oh My God" -- The obsession continues.

+ Lil Wayne, "A Milli (Live)" -- Ultimate stuntin' = Weezy pulls out this be-all-end-all FNMTV performance the same day he passes the mil mark on the charts. Genius!

If singer-songwriter/ guitar guru Albert Hammond Jr. wasn't born in a fitted grey suit, he should've been. Watch his new video, "GfC," (it stands for the song's chord progression, not "Gateway Football Conference") which incorporates a zoopraxiscope -- an invention we're incredibly grateful for, because it basically begat TiVo. And lazy summer tendencies are absolutely no excuse to sleep on his upcoming album, Como Te Llama? when it comes out tomorrow. We fell in love with "In My Room" when we saw his show at Mercury Lounge last week, where we also spotted Albert's new girlfriend, British model Agyness Deyn in the crowd. Albert + Aggie = way more LES cache than John and Jen.

When did Phantom Planet turn into Razorlight? Since celebrity drummer Jason "Hollywood" Schwartzman jumped ship to start his own Coconut Records, Phantom Planet V2 extracted the "California" sound out of their past life, and now they're hitting their stride with a bit of Brit rock strut. Which isn't a bad thing, but it's unexpected from a band most associated with the long national pop culture addiction that was The O.C., which has since been replaced by Gossip Girl. (Appropriately enough, by the way, "Do the Panic" was featured on an episode of Gossip Girl. Josh Schwartz, you done did it again!)

For their new video, "Do the Panic," off their brand-new album, Raise the Dead,
they've traded in the fuzzy freewheeling and gone for a the darker environs of a house that could easily double as the Addams Family's upstate retreat. And just like the Addams Family, it's all about spooky dichotomy: disembodied limbs, gloom and doom, sturm und drang, but the song is actually pretty damned upbeat. Meet contradiction, reanimated appendages, and darker, not-quite-so-sunny pop.
