Not to beat a dead unicorn, but Mermaidgate 2011 is still happening, people. We must discuss!

After seeing Lady Gaga dressed as a mermaid in a wheelchair (NBD), Bette Midler is staking her claim. The legendary singer recently tweeted, "Dear @ladygaga I've been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 - You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker t**s - mermaid's mine."

Dem's fightin' words, Bette! And we totally get it: You were here in a mermaid costume and wheelchair first (and what a title that is to hold!). But we don't think Lady Gaga meant any harm -- she's gone on record saying she had no clue that Bette already covered that (incredibly niche) territory, and that she's also a big fan of hers.

So maybe it's time we put this to bed? All this mermaid stuff is getting out hand. The next thing you know, there'll be some ridiculous GIF of Lady Gaga in her meat dress transforming into The Little Mermaid's Ariel or something ridiculous like that.

We all have songs that bring us to tears. For some of us it's Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings," for others, it's Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," for Lady Gaga it is, apparently, one of her own creations: "Born This Way."

Above we see a teary-eyed Gaga, as she watches YouTube sensation Maria Aragon sing her single "Born This Way." It's been a crazy week for Aragon, a Canadian kid singer, who found herself catapulted to fame after Lady Gaga tweeted the YouTube clip of her singing a solo version of "Born This Way."

Next thing you know, Maria is on Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show, performing for millions and then, last night, on stage in Toronto, for a duet with the woman who wrote the song, Lady Gaga.

Aragon managed to keep her cool, more so than Gaga, really, and at the end of the song she adorably shouted out, "all my friends in Winnipeg and my family." Awww.
