about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

It's been quite a day, has it not? Cats held for ransom. Robert Pattinson showing up on people's underwear. Up is down, black is white.

Well, let's downshift a little here and end the week with a really good jam, shall we? We're big fans of La Roux on this side of the street: we talked to her about cooking and David Bowie, we showed you some really great MTV photos of her. She's already a fearless, refreshing, and inimitable style icon, she's going places, and we're going with her.

In her awes new video, "I'm Not Your Toy," La Roux turns her infectious, lovely electro-pop jam steampunk (check the Viewfinder), and throws in some Frankie Goes To Hollywood too. It's a blast. TGIF!

A couple of weeks ago you got to know the enchanting Elly Jackson, the woman behind the enchanting electro act La Roux. Well, now you get some pictures, too.

In her edition of "The 5," La Roux talked openly about her deep affection for David Bowie, who, I have to say, she shares a striking resemblance to in these pics. Check out this enigmatic collection. And make sure not to smoke cigarettes, despite the fact that she is enjoying one.

+ Check out the entire set of La Roux's exclusive MTV photos here.

If you just judged her on her admittedly fabulous videos, you might take Brit electro-pixie La Roux as some sort of neo-Bjork, post-modern chanteuse from the future. But, really, she's a regular ol' around the way girl (the "way" being London, in this case). Elly Jackson--who performs as La Roux with partner Alex Stewart--is a pretty normal lady; she likes David Bowie, cooking, thinking about fashion and patterns (something on display in her "Bulletproof" clip) and enjoys vintage jewelry.

In this edition of "The 5" Jackson talks about all those things and more. Be sure to check out her live performance of "Bulletproof" from It's On With Alexa Chung.

Just two nights after the 2009 MTV VMAs, which was like fashion week crammed into a single night (in addition to Lady Gaga's one-woman fashion show) we indulged in some New York Fashion Week craziness at the G-Star Raw Spring 2010 show at Hammerstein Ballroom.

G-Star shows are always big on theatrics -- Benicio del Toro recited Joy Divison at a G-Star show in 2009, and Dennis Hopper's also appeared in a G-Star show.

While this year's show didn't star a celebrity on the catwalk, stars like Lindsay Lohan, Taylor Momsen, Asher Book, Corbin Bleu, Christian Siriano, Eric Balfour, Tyson Beckford, Kat Von D, Gabe Saporta, Kara DioGuardi, Peaches Geldof, Jared Leto and Juliette Lewis surrounded the runway as G-Star presented a very retro-futuro rock-n-resort collection to David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel."

What is this, bring your kid to work day? Tiny Masters Of Today are the second teenage band to pop up on Buzzworthy today and I am loving it. Who decided that weathered old junkies were supposed be in charge of rock 'n roll, anyway? Those dudes go to bed at 10. These dudes (specifically brother/sister duo Ivan and Ada, and friend Jackson Pollis*) stay up all night freaking out about things like how insane it would've been to see The Stooges. OK, I'm projecting, it's unfair. But it's not totally unfounded.

I read this Facebook status update this morning that's stuck with me all day: "Just watched Almost Famous and was reminded of how fun it is to love a band that much." Sure, old folks (read: twenty-somethings) love music, too. But I really do believe that nobody falls in love with the world -- especially the consumable world -- as deeply or intensely as 14-year-olds. Everything is new. And for the first time, it kind of looks like yours.

What better explanation is there for the level of commitment and sincerity in Tiny Masters Of Today's swagger? And what better explanation for the freshness and recklessness of their careless sound?

Again, I hate to dwell on age, because Tiny Masters Of Today sound just as legit as any gang of disillusioned 35-year-olds. They've more than held their own on collaborations with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kimya Dawson, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the B-52s. David Bowie called them geniuses. Now they're back to blow all those middle-agers away again with a new blah-punk ballad called "Pop Chart." The video is below. Quit reading and watch it already.

* thanks ashlonie!

+ Amazing interview with Ada of Tiny Masters Of Today

There's no doubt in my mind that by now you've heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," a fragile opera originally by Leonard Cohen, is downright ubiquitous, popping up everywhere from The OC to your mom's car mix.

And, great as that ol' holy roller is, there's plenty more Jeff Buckley to love beyond "Hallelujah." The high-crooning set of heartbreakers on Grace, which surfaced around the same time that Radiohead hit it big, won Buckley legions of instant fans (among them Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and David Bowie) with their uncommonly delicate sweetness.

Tragically, the artist turned out to be as ephemeral as his melodies, and he slipped out of the world at 31, drowning in Tennessee's Wolf River before he even had a chance to really stretch his musical legs.

But talents this big die hard. Jeff Buckley's ever-expanding fan base, and his outrageously dedicated mother, have made sure that the lost genius lives on, spreading his songs wherever they go. Well, their mission got a whole lot easier, yesterday: with the release of a new CD/DVD compilation called Grace Around The World, Buckley's finest live material is now readily available to anybody who's interested.

The Deluxe Limited Edition release includes audio and video from multiple live performances, an unreleased documentary called Amazing Grace, a 24-page booklet, a 2-sided poster and, unbelievably, MORE.

+ Watch Jeff Buckley's timeless "Grace" video below, and see what's got everybody so worked up (if you don't know already).

The 1990s, who share origins and former members with fellow Scots Franz Ferdinand, are an indie rock group on the rise. The blogosphere is already all over them, and these days, that usually means the rest of the world is just a breath away. Or at least a car commercial.

Signed to the same European label that has carried The Strokes, The Libertines, Belle & Sebastian, and The Arcade Fire, the 1990s' pedigree alone ought to be enough to get your attention. But wait, there's more.

Not only are their songs airy David Bowie-evoking pop gems -- particularly "59," the first single from their latest album, Kicks -- but they also have flat-out incredible videos to match.

The "59" video, which has just entered the MTV2 rotation, is a stop-motion animation masterpiece. The band members and assorted other characters are rendered as two-dimensional paper cut-outs, uncrumpling and grooving out in a charming miniature world. It's stunning.

Watch "59" and see why we love the 1990s!

Inspired by Bill's (maybe?) new(-ish) hair, today's Cherry Tree's Tweet that Tokio Hotel's hauling ass to finish up that new album, and, speaking of ass, the new Tokio Hotel TV ep wherein Gustav shakes his, I put together a new video playlist lovingly entitled "Dance, Tokio Hotel, Dance."

They're all videos about dancing. (I know. Brainbusting concept, no?)

Highlights include:

+ Fall Out Boy | "Dance Dance"

+ Metro Station | "Shake It"

+ Chromeo | "Fancy Footwork"

+ David Bowie | "Let's Dance"

+ CSS | "Move"

+ Hot Hot Heat | "Talk To Me Dance With Me"

+ Mase | "Breathe, Stretch, Shake"

+ TV On The Radio | "Dancing Choose"

+ The Danger O's | "Dance Dance Revolution 2"

... and more! Watch them all here, ToHos, und tanz!!

+ Eldest Jonas Brother Kevin shared all sortsa juicy stuff with Detroit's Channel 955 during an exclusive radio interview. To summarize: JoBros + Taylor Swift = TOTALLY friends; Sasha + Malia Obama = adorbs; purity rings = still on tight. (MTV News)

+ Should we be concerned that Lindsay Lohan is taking this whole concept of skinny jeans a bit too seriously? (The Superficial)

+ Justin Timberlake feels like we got our swagga back thanks to Obama. (Pop Sugar)

+ Madonna's Sticky + Sweet Tour Part Deux? Apparently it's so on this summer. (Faded Youth)

+ Lil Wayne's next album, a rock LP entitled Rebirth, will be dropping April 7th. Prediction: on April 8, Weezy F. Baby's gonna be bumpin' this to celebrate. (MTV News)

+ Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson: potential new besties? Mebbe... Kelly's rumored second single from her new album, All I Ever Wanted, is a song written by Katy and new American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi: "I Do Not Hook Up" (sure you don't Katy...er...Kells) (Perez Hilton)

+ Diddy already changed his name like 1,365,277 times and no one really cared, so now Kanye West is jumping onto the bandwagon. From here on in, please refer to the former Louis Vuitton don as, um, Martin Louis The King, Jr. (And commence eye rolling in 3... 2... 1) (Rap-Up)

+ Breaking: David Bowie has joined the Twitterverse (as has Aretha Franklin's hat). (The Rad Report)

+ Pete Wentz wears furry boots and, um, you know... maybe shouldn't! (Pop on the Pop)

We just got finished watching the newest video by the The White Tie Affair ("Allow Me To Introduce Myself...Mr. Right") and all we can say is..."Wow." Not since Fiona Apple splashed around in a soft-core hot tub have we appreciated so many bare limbs and so much low light. (It's like Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" video, except with more lyrics and fewer clothes!) But then again, that's exactly what we've come to expect from White Tie Affair, the synthed-out Chicago act (think: Fall Out Boy meets David Bowie) is almost enough to distract us from the fact that lead singer Chris Wallace looks just like Derek Zoolander. Anyhow, watch, listen and learn. And don't be afraid to get wet.

Want more White Tie Affair? Check out our exclusive interview with the band and flip through these photos to see whether Chris has what it takes to pull off "Blue Steel."
