Oh hey, my rascacielos! I'm Sam Lansky, pop music writer, and this is Pop Think, where I gush unapologetically about the pop stars who make my heart skip a beat. (Somebody should probably give it a break!)

This week's subject is my girl Demi Lovato, who overcame some major personal obstacles to release last year's most devastating and triumphant ballad, "Skyscraper." Now, she's set her sights on continued success with her latest single, "Give Your Heart A Break," one of the most perfect pure pop songs in recent memory. Demi's track record of pop excellence remains unbroken, and I'm examining why "Give Your Heart A Break" is some of her best work to date.

Late last year, I tweeted that the way Demi Lovato's voice cracks on the word "in" at 2:49 of "Give Your Heart A Break" is the Greatest Pop Music Moment of the Year, and a bunch of people retweeted it; this proves that I was empirically correct. (That's how the internet works, right?) In fact, since she's releasing that song as a single on Jan. 24, it will probably be the Greatest Pop Music Moment of the Year in 2012, too. But seriously, pay attention to that one little moment in the song, because it sums up everything that's compelling about Demi Lovato as a musician: Even when she's singing well-produced pop songs penned by a cadre of super-hitmakers, there's a very personal vulnerability that underpins her artistry, something beautiful and sad and, ironically, a little bit broken, in the best way possible.

It was, after all, no accident that her last studio album was titled Unbroken, given the tumultuous year that precipitated that record's release. The first single, the gut-wrenching masterpiece "Skyscraper," was all about survival and triumph, but the album is much more sonically and thematically diverse than that: It's top-heavy with club bangers and party jams, including collabs with Missy Elliott and Dev, then bursting with shimmery pop and melodically charged midtempos in its second half.

But after a song like "Skyscraper," which instantly became Demi's defining cut, it was smart to go with a follow-up single like "Give Your Heart A Break," which packs a subtle emotional wallop in its own right. It's also a song about pain, even if it's more a song about romantic turmoil than the overcoming-the-obstacles inspirational bent of "Skyscraper."

Sure, I totally get that pop stars have to have a few regular friends, but I mostly think famous people just wanna be friends with other famous people. Why? Common ground! Take me, for example: I have no clue what it feels like to have private planes at my disposal, a famous boyfriend or a closet full of pricey clothes. But BFF's Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez can talk and bond about these things!

Demi totally understands how hard it is to date a dude in the limelight and can advise Selena on how to properly shoo away female groupies. And Selena totally understands what it's like having too many clothes in her closet and can let Demi in on where to purchase the most efficient and space-saving hangers! #PopStarProblems

OK, yes, Lil Wayne is Nicki Minaj's boss. And OK, yes, they probably did! may or may not have hooked up. But we're still calling them BFFs! I mean, just look at the love right there. Nicki's about to give her bossman a big ol' smooch on the cheek, and she's making sure to capture the magical moment on her BlackBerry. And Weezy is just chilling the eff out with an expensive cigar, but what else is new?

We're not at all surprised that Demi Lovato took home the award for Favorite Pop Artist at last night's People's Choice Awards, and we're also not surprised at her bold performance of "Give Your Heart A Break." Demi's become the virtual poster child of self-esteem and confidence for young women -- to quote the '90s, "You go, girl!" -- and Demi owned that effing stage, OK.

Instead of towering over the audience on a riser like we've seen in past performances of "Skyscraper," Demi went a more direct route for "Heart." Dressed in head-to-toe red (including her hair!), Demi delivered the opening lines of her song on a simple black-and-white checkered platform, demanding the crowd's attention: "The day I met you, you told me you never fall in love/But now that I get you, I know that fear is really what it is."

Later Demi successfully walked down a Lucite staircase without tripping (an accomplishment in and of itself) to take to the runway and finish out her anthem. Our favorite part, though, might have been at the end of her performance when she accepted her Favorite Pop Artist award: "I won this award because of my fans so I dedicate this to you guys... Without you guys tweeting so many times, I wouldn't be up here tonight... I love you guys." The girl can do no wrong, you guys.

Demi Lovato, where have you been hiding those freckles? They're UH-DORABLE. The "Give Your Heart A Break" singer is Seventeen's Feburary cover girl, and even though she looks stunning in light summery makeup, we're pretty sure the only place February actually looks like that is if you live directly on the equator. Make room, South America. We're coming.

Demi opens up inside the issue about how far she's come from her darker days before she entered a treatment facility: "I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t throw up after my meals, I don’t starve myself. There’s nothing that I do that I feel ashamed of." That is so great, Demi! We'd be right there with you, but our "Housewives" addiction makes us feel pretty low.

The singer also got pretty candid when her best friends came up: "[Miley Cyrus and I] are very strong-headed, so when we fight, it's brutal and we're like, 'We're never going to be friends again!' Then two days later, we're like, 'I love you and I miss you!' Selena [Gomez] and I, we never fight. She's not a confrontational person at all. Both of them will never leave my life no matter what happens, because we've been through so much together." Um, can I get invited to that girls night?! We can make friendship bracelets!

So while I was at an overheated and overcrowded New Year's Eve party in the depths of Brooklyn (with no New Year's kiss, FYI), MTV was throwing "NYE In NYC 2012," a huge-ass party cohosted by "Teen Wolf's" Tyler Posey and Demi Lovato, featuring live performances by Demi, Selena Gomez, Jason Derulo, Mac Miller and J. Cole. And even though I missed it IRL, I can relive the night with these performance videos. Yay, internet!

Our girl Dem (who, by the way, looked COMPLETELY STUNNING in her NYE ensemble) took the stage to perform her brand-new single, "Give Your Heart A Break." Backed by a full band, not only did Demi deliver a completely heartfelt performance, but girlfriend was singing VERY LIVE and she sounded VERY incredible.

Jason Derulo hit the stage to perform his ode to the perfect lady, "It Girl," followed by his club banger "Don't Wanna Go Home." (The most important part? HIS SHIRT WAS OFF.) MTV Push alum Mac Miller was jumping tirelessly during the entire performance of "Party On Fifth Avenue," and unsurprisingly, J. Cole was as chill and dope as ever while performing his hit "Workout." Selena Gomez closed out the night and looked fully festive in a crystal-encrusted gown as she sang "Love You Like A Love Song" and her current single, "Hit The Lights."

So yes, in case anyone was still confused about it, MTV's New Year's Eve celebration was, in fact, significantly better than yours.

Happy 2012, guys! How's it going so far?! The world's still spinning, so that's pretty cool. Also pretty cool is the fact that Demi Lovato rang in the new year looking more gorgeous than ever! MTV Instagram-ed this pic (we're using that as a noun this year, FYI) of the "Skyscraper" singer when she was on hand for our "NYE In NYC" countdown, and JEEEEEEEZ, lady. Save some pretty for the rest of us!

2011 was a stand-out year for Demi, but it looks like 2012 is off to a great start as well. The singer tweeted yesterday, "Not tweeting much because I'm on a mini-vacation enjoying my time away from everything. Hope you guys understand. :)" Insanely jealous of you right now, Dems. Even though most of the country was just on vacation for two weeks, it felt like 2 seconds. Le sigh. #ForeverDreamingOfSweatpants
