about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

The leaves are leaving the trees and the kids are back in school. It's starting to look like Woodie weather out there, no?

MTVU's annual award show--held this year on December 4th--honors those artists who put it down on college campuses everywhere; celebrating the music the kids listen to while studying to become the future leaders of America, etc. And the best part about this show? You can vote to determine who wins!

This year features a really healthy crop of artists. Let's take a gander at some of the categories and nominees, shall we?

For the Woodie of the Year Award, for the artist who made the biggest splash on college campuses this year, we've got Asher Roth, Kings Of Leon, Drake, Silversun Pickups and MGMT.

In the category of Breaking Woodie, which honors up and coming artists who have made headway with the kids, the nominees are Grizzly Bear, Never Shout Never, Wale, La Roux, Friendly Fires and Passion Pit.

Probably my favorite category, Left Field Woodie, which features artists who defy classification, features nominees like Amanda Blank, Major Lazer, Janelle Monae and P.O.S.

You can also vote in the categories Performing Woodie, Good Woodie and College Radio Woodie, BMOC Woodie and Best Video Woodie.

Comme Des Garçons is the Japanese fashion house helmed by the eccentric, elusive, and exulted Rei Kawakubo, who's been doing freak fashions à la Lady Gaga since before Lady Gaga was eating a salad on MTV's Boiling Points. Fashiony types who know what's up -- the Commes Des Garçons for H&M collabo was an all-out feeding frenzy, and Marc Jacobs himself is a fan of the label -- and celebs like Alexa Chung, Drake (who've both worn the "Play" cardigan), and Katie Holmes are all fans of the brand.

During Comme Des Garçons' Fall/ Winter 2009 fashion show this past March, models walked the runway in black shoes with feet drawn on them. How post-modern AND redundant! Now, what you see on the runway isn't always what ends up produced and in stores, but, lucky for you shoes-with-feet-on-them fans, Comme Des Garcons' foot shoes are available at Paris' fashion-as-religion boutique Colette for the washed and unwashed masses. They're $840, and they're especially helpful if you're one of those people who sometimes puts the wrong shoe on the wrong foot. (And I'm not saying I am.)

+ Would you wear Comme Des Garçons's foot shoes?

As the season changes, most birds migrate south for the colder months, and Bryan "Birdman" Williams is no different from his winged brethren.

In his new video, "Money to Blow," the third single from his upcoming Pricele$$ album (following hot on the heels of the espionage-themed "Written On Her"), Birdman is joined by Young Money rookie of the year Drake in a place called "Houstatlantavegas." It's a shiny place where the lights are bright, the women pump gas, and the dollars are kept in Saran Wrap. Looks like a lovely place to wait out the winter.

Active followers of Drake's ongoing battle with the frequently mangled muscles in his knee (get caught up here or follow along at @drakesknee), will note that Drake spends much of the video copping a squat in a nice white wicker number. Pimp! Weezy makes an AutoTuned appearance as well.

Drake, Kanye West (sorry!), Lil Wayne, and Eminem's new video, "Forever," was directed by the legendary Hype Williams and is featured in the new LeBron James film More Than a Game.

Watch "Forever" now, and celebrate the air horn, the club, LeBron, and the struggle.

When's hype not just hype? When it's HOVA. And because it's Jay-Z, you've probably already heard most if not all of his eleventh official album, The Blueprint 3 -- sorry, Jay. People just couldn't wait. But people just couldn't wait for keys to the Roc Nation. This is the OFFICIAL MTV.com Blueprint 3 full-length album leak.

Jay-Z's obviously the CEO of The Blueprint 3, but the board also features Alicia Keys, Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Mr. Hudson, Drake, Swizz Beatz, Young Jeezy, Pharrell, J. Cole, Rihanna, and Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun. That's more guests than your last Thanksgiving dinner. When Jay-Z asks you to guest, the answer's yes.

+ Listen to every track of Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 right now on MTV.com's "The Leak."

And don't miss Jay-Z's live performance at the 2009 MTV VMAs on Sunday, September 13.

Okay, between us, Drake even told ME I'M the best. I'm beginning to think Drake gives all the girls the "you're the best" treatment.

Donna and Ruby Ibarra, two sisters from California, and their friend Anna De Guzman -- they're sheselle on YouTube -- covered Drake's "Best I Ever Had" and gave it the song a whole new not-just-boobs-and-basketball feminine twist. And they even threw in some Filipino pride with a verse in Tagalog. A verse that Ruby wrote!

(Donna Ibarra, Anna De Guzman, and Ruby Ibarra)

We've had their Drake cover on repeat here on the 17th floor of MTV.com, and when I played it for one of the designers here, his response was "I thought it was gonna be like a joke. These girls can sing." Someone needs to sign these ladies. I believe there's a blank space on the Young Money roster where Omarion's name used to be, right?

Much like the name "Digital Girl" suggests, almost no part of Jamie Foxx's "Digital Girl" -- neither the song nor the new "Digital Girl" video, directed by Hype Williams -- was created without digital assistance. Hype Williams' electro-roboto-futuro style may be his calling card as an auteur, but "Digital Girl" is just ridiculous. Wait... I just went back and read what I wrote. Jamie Foxx? Ridiculous? Right. Silly me. Okay! More Drake please! Also, that one model looks FAR too much like Aaliyah for my personal comfort. Awkward.

Watch Jamie Foxx's "Digital Girl" video, featuring Kanye West, The-Dream, and Drake.

The 2009 MTV VMA nominees are OUT! And sorry, Britney fans, but Lady Gaga and Beyonce are the big earners so far with NINE NOMINATIONS EACH for "Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)," "Poker Face," and "Paparazzi" leaving Britney in the dust with a "paltry" seven nominations for "Womanizer."

Also, WTG, Drake! What up, dude. Hope that knee heals. He's up on the leaderboard with his first-ever nomination for Best New Artist!

+ Move over "Drake's Knee's" Twitter! Time to make some room for "Teyana's Mustache," another fake Twitter account named after a celeb's body part. What's next?? "PammiesBoobays?" (Twitter)

+ Kings of Leon tore up the Today show stage this past Friday at NYC's Rockefeller Center. These guys are sooooo hot and sound so GOOD!! I need to go towel off now, if you'll excuse me. (The Rad Report)

+ Gotta scroll down a bit after you click, but here's a really cute interview with Demi Lovato, who topped the Billboard charts last week at #1 with her sophomore album "Here We Go Again." Congrats, Demi! (Katie & Karleigh)

+ This one is bringing the Monday LOLz: Whitney Houston's Good Morning America performance next month will be taped instead of sung live because Ms. Houston is "not a morning person." Is that what we're calling it these days? (PopCrunch)

+ No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Paramore's Hayley Williams teamed up in concert together in Irvine, CA at what was at the least an unforgettable show. (Neon Limelight)

+ Remember when Rihanna almost got in trouble for giving a tattoo to her tattoo artist? Well, now Chris Brown is doing the same crap. (Singersroom Celebs)

+ Rocker Dave Grohl got a street named after him in his hometown of Warren, OH. (NME)

I don't know WHERE the girls in Drake's new "Best I Ever Had" video go to school, but the PTA really needs to hold a bake sale or something and help get these girls into some supportive sports bras! Because that is NO way to play basketball, ladies.

Drake is Young Money's (Lil Wayne's label) latest signee, Rihanna's rumored new love interest, and a Degrassi grad. He also sucks at coaching basketball, which is fine because as the emcee on everyone's lips, he's got the rap game on lock right now, and he doesn't even have an album out yet. So, I have a feeling things will still work out for him if coaching doesn't.

Oh yeah, and Kanye directed the video, which was shot at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn, and features cameos from the Young Money Crew.
