Dear people with very high-paying jobs and suits more expensive than my rent,

Being a Fiona Apple fan is kind of like being a Chicago Cubs fan -- you wait and wait and wait and just when you think your break's about to come, the higher-ups make you keep waiting. (Those higher-ups being record company execs and the baseball gods, respectively.) It's hard maintaining this undying love for one of the best singer-songwriters to come out of the '90s when times are so trying, okay?

L.A. Reid, Epic Records chairman and CEO, tweeted earlier this week, "Lots of good music coming from @Epic_Records in the next few weeks. Stay tuned music fans. Welcome back Fiona!" Then every millennial and Gen-Y female (and some really cool dudes I know) immediately lost their collective s***. But when Time followed up with Epic, demanding (politely, I'm sure) a more specific time frame for the new Fiona tunes, an Epic spokesperson could only confirm that the album would be out some time in 2012. (Let me just remind you we are currently in the first month of the year... out of 12. Le sigh.)

You guys don't even understand how hard of a job it is having "Flashback Friday" as your responsibility. Do you know how many hours can just pass and pass while you're withering away in the black hole that is MTV's video vault? MANY HOURS. It's so hard to choose!

This week we're revisiting Fiona Apple's "Criminal," and let me tell you why. Yes, Britney Spears is an icon and Beyoncé is a queen and Lady Gaga is pop royalty, but guys, Fiona helped pave the way for all of them. "Criminal" won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1997, and the song's album, Tidal, went three times platinum in the U.S. Fiona's collaborated with music legends Johnny Cash and Cat Stevens, and -- little known fact -- she's basically BFF with the ridiculously hilarious Zach Galifianakis.

And of course, let us not forget the acceptance speech heard 'round the world. Fiona Apple declaring, "This world is bulls***!" when she won the 1997 MTV VMA for Best New Artist, was, to date, the most swagged out ish I've ever seen in my life. Sure, I can recite every one of her songs backwards and forwards, blindfolded, with my hands tied behind my back, but regardless, the lady is a trailblazer, people. Recognize!

Rewatch Fiona Apple's video "Criminal" below, and LOL with me that this was considered "scandalous" in 1997.

I'm Kanye West, and I approve of these tweets.

Presented without commentary (other than the genius of his own commentary), here are 10 things -- from Fiona Apple to pants -- that, via the incredible gold mine that is his Twitter, Kanye West likes, loves or just likes to throw lots of exclamation points after.

Justin Bieber -- "Your album good @Justinbieber Playing it at my crib now."

M.I.A. -- "M.I.A's from the future. Our present is her past."

Fonts! -- "Sometimes I get emotional over fonts"

Symmetry -- "I'm just tryna keep it symmetrical"

La Roux -- "La Roux Bullet Proof on repeat right now"

Leather Pants!!!! -- "I got the best leather pants collection since the 80's .... If I must"

Matt & Kim -- "Matt & Kim - Daylight ... drums are so stupid on this song!!"

Fiona Apple -- "Fiona Apple - Sleep to Dream... one of my favorite opening lines to a song... "I have never been so insulted in all my life!" (Note: It's "Sleep To Dream," and it's actually the second verse, but whatevs. Video's below.)

Bellinis! -- "Is it to early for a bellini??? Too late, already ordered"

Life -- "Life is awesome"

With the Academy Awards airing this Sunday, March 7th, we thought it would be a great idea to give props to our film-buff brethren and take this Vault Videos opportunity to celebrate those brilliant directors who have successfully made the transition from music videos to big-screen blockbusters. Allow us to present you with the Top Videos by an Oscar-Nominated Director.

And ... Action!

"Buddy Holly" by Weezer (directed by Spike Jonze, who was nominated for Being John Malkovich): You don't have to be a Happy Days fan to appreciate the cinematic brilliance of this Jonze clip. Hell, the skateboard-loving director was even able to bring diner-owner Al Delvecchio out of storage for an unexpected cameo. Wonder if Ron Howard was busy...

"Vogue" by Madonna (directed by David Fincher, who was nominated for The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button): Before directing big-screen cult classics like Se7en and Fight Club, Fincher got his start at the helm of videos for Paula Abdul ("Straight Up"), Aerosmith ("Janie's Got a Gun") and, of course, this particular Madge gem. We love the black-and-white tone, and don't get us started on the amazing dancing. You can't see us, but we're totally letting our bodies move to the music while we type this.

"Under The Bridge" by The Red Hot Chili Peppers (directed by Gus Van Sant, who was nominated for Milk): Understated yet powerful, this simple Chili Peppers clip is representative of Van Sant's signature directing style. Before "Under The Bridge" was released, the Peppers were just another wild-and-crazy L.A. band. Yet once the song and—more important—the video hit airwaves, the band became more than just keg-tapping figureheads. They became serious musicians—and inarguable rock stars.

"Fast As You Can" by Fiona Apple (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who was nominated for There Will Be Blood): Before hooking up with Maya Rudolph (and fathering a couple kids with the funnywoman), Paul Thomas Anderson was in a much-publicized, long-term relationship with Fiona Apple. He directed many clips for Apple, but this one has got to be our favorite because the stop-action sequence at the end might've captured the only footage we've ever seen of Apple smiling. The man's that talented.

Here, read this Gchat I had with my buddy in L.A. the other day:

Buddy: Hey- I saw this band last night called HAIM. They are unsigned and AMAZING. Three sisters ages 16, 19 and 21.

Me: :-/ ... like Corey Haim?

Buddy: No! Pronounced like "Hi-Eem." These girls are unbelievable. They have these amazing deep voices. And they're totally hot but they rock out with super ugly faces! And, I mean, one is 16! So good!

Obviously my curiosity was piqued, right? I mean, wouldn't yours be? So I dig the gals up on MySpace and listen to a couple tracks... And yeah, I can hear the rock twisting their baby faces. They've got so much attitude! You can practically see their necks doing that "Nuh uh,  girl" side to side thing when you listen. As for the actual music, they sound kinda like... Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette joined 4 Non Blondes or Hole? Is that too obscure? Like Brandi Carlile (I effing LOVE her! -- Tamar) became a really big fan of P!nk and Aerosmith! Does that make sense? Hey, how about you just take a listen to HAIM on your own and let me know what you think?! Cool?

We just got finished watching the newest video by the The White Tie Affair ("Allow Me To Introduce Myself...Mr. Right") and all we can say is..."Wow." Not since Fiona Apple splashed around in a soft-core hot tub have we appreciated so many bare limbs and so much low light. (It's like Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" video, except with more lyrics and fewer clothes!) But then again, that's exactly what we've come to expect from White Tie Affair, the synthed-out Chicago act (think: Fall Out Boy meets David Bowie) is almost enough to distract us from the fact that lead singer Chris Wallace looks just like Derek Zoolander. Anyhow, watch, listen and learn. And don't be afraid to get wet.

Want more White Tie Affair? Check out our exclusive interview with the band and flip through these photos to see whether Chris has what it takes to pull off "Blue Steel."

Inspired by Ashanti, who takes a turn in the tub in her new video, "The Way That I Love You," Buzzworthy done did a little deep dive of our own... for our favorite videos soaking in bathtub cliches, from sexy -- George Michael's billion-dollar bathing beauties in "Freedom" -- to pseudo-suicidal -- Britney's (eerie) rebirth in "Everytime" -- to downright dirty -- Fiona Apple's "Criminal" classic.
